Rudder Hinge Delema

Post by Steve Pierce »

I have 170A in my shop that I am changing out the tailwheel attach bracket IAW Cessna Service Instruction 70A52-4. When I removed the rudder the top to hinges were held on with 1/4" bolts but the bottom was held on with a 3/16" bolt. The hole in the bottom of the rudder hinge is 3/16" but the hole in the hinge at the fuselage aft bulkhead has a bushing in it and is 1/4". The part catalog is not very clear on the bottom hinge. It calls for an A-325-1 Bearing-Oilite and a 0431119 Bushing-Rudder hinge but doesn't call out the bolt size. Anybody have any dealings with this?

Steve, The 170B parts cat. Calls for a AN4-11A bolt. I believe these are the same as the A model. It is the same bolt that is in the top hinge. That one also shows to have a bearing in it. We replaced ours a couple of years ago during our rebuild, and as I recall we just went by the parts cat. and had no problems, (except its a bear to get the bolts in), . As I recall I used a set of forceps to hold the bolts and nuts to get them started. By the way the book calls for AN365-428 nuts. Jon

Steve looking at the cat. again, the hinge numbers match that of the A model, so that bolt size should be a good starting place. Jon

Thanks John. I just ordered the parts from Cessna. A-325-1 Bearing-Oilite $10.28 and a 0431119 Bushing-Rudder hinge $94.30. I have a feeling one of these is missing. Still don't understand the 3/16" hole on the bottom of the rudder. I posted some pictures here. http://picasaweb.google.com/Pierceaero/Cessna170A#

Steve I might be crazy, and it doesn't show it in the Parts cat., but as I recall the bottom hole that you have pictured, had a bushing in it on mine. I am not near the hanger today, but I am almost positive mine had a bushing there. I will be very busy this weekend, but will try to get out to the hanger and check mine, but I know I remember a bushing at the bottom hole there. Why it was there I don't know, unless it was just there because the hole had wallered out, (technical term  ). It was that way when we got the plane, so I left it alone as I put it back together. Jon

Looks like you need a new part, as your rudder deflection stops are needing attention as well.

What part needs to be replaced and what is wrong with the rudder deflection stops?

I'm looking at either side of the lower hinge on the rudder where the AN3 bolts butt up against (stops).

I looked at the rudder and fuselage and am not sure what you are seeing. There is paint rubbed off the rudder bellcrank where it contacts the stop bolts. Is that what you are looking at?

Steve I looked at the pictures again closer after c170CB mentioned this. They look alright to me from what I can see.

Sorry I quickly looked at the first picture and it looked like the contact area had been filed away instead of the two lips that contact the bolts. I'm obviously wrong here but I'll look at my hinge point as I thought the bolt holes on top to bottom were the same size. I see that horn is a PMA part sold by just about everybody probably because the rudder stop contact area gets deformed,

Looked at mine today and it appears to be a AN-3 right through, Its been 4 years since I installed the rudder and I only remember the very small bushing going in the hinge (attached to the fuselage) on the "B".

I do just about anything old. Last projects were a Stearman, Luscombe and 3 Clippers. Got two Super Cubs in the shop along with a J3 and a Stinson 108-3 on the way to get a 220 hp Franklin installed. They are all fun.
