Did you ever manage to get a voltage reading on the starter terminal while cranking? If it sucks the voltage way down, get an amperage reading on the line. It almost sounds like you might have either a 24 volt starter motor or some high resistance in the circuit. Maybe you should check the voltage all along the line from the Battery to the starter while applying the cranking load.

I figured this out, the brand new aerotech starter, was shorting out.... Now to get aerotech to replace it.

Yep, that "smoke" at the terminal is a clue that the connection is insecure. Return it.j3pup wrote:I figured this out, the brand new aerotech starter, was shorting out.... Now to get aerotech to replace it.

Well it gets better and I have pics to upload later. The nut they sent on the +bolt is the wrong thread. We were setup for failure. You can clearly see its the nut that came with it, from the color. The nut on our old starter is dull and greasy. I hope this isn't a hassle. We had the old starter on and off 100 times before we bought this one, and never spun the nut. Now I wonder if I just dropped $765 on a starter adapter that I didn't need. Oh well at least I have all new wiring, solenoids and a starter adapter.
Also I have to say that the 170 association forums have helped me 100 times more than the "other organization", even on an airplane that's not a 170. Thanks for tolerating me and my 210 guys, and thanks for the help.

No matter what type airplane we can all learn from situations like this. Well most of us anyway .

The real test is to disconnect the main wire at the starter and activate the starter circuit and check with a load tester the amp draw from the start system. If the load checks good, you have a bad rebuilt starter, which does happen sometimes.

Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
Well, if it's any consolation, $765 is a lot less than I paid for a starter adapter for my T210 ten years ago. It was well over $1000 back then.

The starter mechanism on the Lycomings looks crude in comparison, but it sure is cheaper to fix.

Re: Cessna 210 Starter Slow New Battery, New Starter still s
I heard from Aerotech, and they are convinced we stripped the bolt and turned the nut on the starter, by over tightening it. They said they see this all the time, but they will cover it for me anyway. What I don't understand is why I could take on and off my old starter 10 times and never over tighten the nut? Either way they are fixing it, and I even offered to pay the $20 bux it would cost him to repair it, but he wouldn't take it. He warned me to always use 2 wrenches when putting them on.

Seems to me that trouble shooting with a VOM and an ammeter should have found the problem early on.

Well it tricked me because I though a new starter would have been fine, or provided a different problem.
