Back Seat

Post by james_layman »

It only took 62 years; the hollow tube frame for the original rear seat finally broke! So...

* looking for salvage (tried the usual commercial outlets) so we can just cut out the damaged sections and weld the salvage in place.

*or, advice on how best to accomplish the repair so all 4 attach points actually line up. Do we have to build a "seat jig" ? or is the only critical measurement the distance between the floor attach points.

It's critical to get the side-wall attach points correct.

See Fig 31 of the B-model IPC. Item 3 is an AN3 bolt which attaches the seat side-frame to the (sidewall) bracket. (which by the way, they have illustrated in reverse....the bolt installs from inside-outwardly. The sidewall bracket has a nutplate inside which accepts the bolt threads after the bolt has been inserted thru a welded bushing in the seat tubing.) That area of the seat frame must be the correct dimension, and must not be pulled askew by other repairs or the seat will stress the cabin floor/sidewall/bracket and will not install/remove easily.

I don't believe the pre 62 MM has an approved tubing repair in the SRM, so you might want to go to 43.13-1B and check out the welding chapter for a repair of the seat frame or back (you don't say where the damage is located). You can get the correct diameter and thickness of 4130 tubing from Spruce or other suppliers. Have your A&P cut out the old damage and weld in the new, sign it off and you're back flying. Don't forget..... right rudder.
