Paint designs

Post by dgkirk »

I just bought a damaged '54 170B and am in the process of rebuilding it. It has nice paint, but it's a rather blah medium blue on white with a so-so design. Since I'm replacing several fuselage skins and the cowling, I want to change the color and design. Will need to stay with the white since the wings and tail were not damaged and I don't want to strip them. Can anyone supply a '54 paint scheme or picture? I've got a '52 B model flying that is in the original design, but not sure what the '54 had. Any help?

I can attest to the PPonk mod as the gear didn't come out, but it did in both fwd and aft bulkheads (but no wing damage since the gear stayed put).

Also looking for a late model single door opening upper cowl if anyone knows of one.

Thanks!

Thanks Doug..... My plane had the original paint when I bought it, so it was easy to just follow the lines. I would be happy to take some detailed pictures if dgkirk wants them......

I just painted a 54. The owner purchased from cessna the paint scheme blueprint. If you would like I can check with him and see if he would mind taking a photo copy of that blue print and sending it on to you. Brian
P.S he wanted Materhorn white and Takeoff Red in Jet Glow

Thanks everybody for the help. I could use the photos, John and if Indopilot could get a copy of the blueprint that would be great!

Now if I could just find the upper cowl...............

Still working on getting mine to shine like yours! Has to be one of the nicest B models I have ever seen. Here is one of my pics from Merced.

One of my favorites from airliners.net

Is that the original color?

The original airplane was not polished. It was natural. (That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.)

The original was just a a bit more maroon. It looked good on the paint chips, but when finished it turned out a little more red than the original.

To dgkirk and any others: This is an old thread, but I'm trying to get original specs on painting a '52 B. I've seen lots of pix on airliners.net, but I guess my paint shop is gonna want dimensions and artwork. Anybody got anything specific on the '52 paint scheme? I'll use an off-white as the foundation color, just need the accent layout. Thanks.
