Look like they could be for a light.

It take it, that they are not necessary for
proper function of the instrument.

i'm thinking about leaving this glare shield off
if i do, i'd have to attach the compass to the dash somehow.
also, one can see the covering has pulled away from the backing aluminum
what is the best glue to use to repair it?
also, i'd like to paint the silver cover of the instrument panel
that original brown
does anyone know the color code?
thanks
dave

What am I seeing? Looks like a custom padded glare shield with two (2) hand holds pilot & Co Pilot/ passenger

The float mag compass appears to be permanently affixed to the glare shield.

Is this what I am seeing?

Very Valuable shield. Very

hello moonlight
are you serious?
is it really valuable?
its just a padded piece of aluminum
held onto the dash by two metal screws
it was added to my plane in 1979
its gets very hot in the sun
i'm trying to make my panel a little more original looking
so was going to remove it

I don't know that it is valuable. Guess that is in the eye of the beholder.

I know from time to time people are looking for a glare shield that overhangs the panel and others are looking for it in order to hang lights under it to illuminate the panel.

There once was a STC'd lighted glare shield now longer available. I do not know if Dave's shield is one of those. His shield could simply be someones creation from aluminum, padding and naugahyde.

How much is it worth?

Dave, your compass was originally hung from the center windshield strip. If you still have that you could remount the compass there. I'll bet your current compass can be removed from the pad and just remounted on the top of the instrument panel which is likely what I'd do.

hi bruce
i think you hit it right on.
there is a row of lights under the overhang.
there is two white wires going to them
which along with the two black wires from the compass
pass down through a hole with a grommet through the dash
i think the back wires illuminate the compass when the panel lights are turned on
i googled images of C170 panels
and found one that also had this glare shield
i'm not that hot on having it on anymore
but will keep it if I decide to put it back on
it weights 3.7 lbs
thanks for all your help

Be cautious on painting the glare shield. Light colours reflect back on to the glass and makes it hard to see through especially if the landscape that you are flying over is a similar color. I would hang on to your glare shield ,as I think you will be putting it back on at a later date . Mine has a 4in over hang and I wish I had made it to have a 6 in over hang .

Due to no STC around , I have Velcro my glare shield on. It’s not a “permanent “ fixture.

Looks like an "Avion" type glare shield or a copy of there's. Likely someone dished out $500 or so new.

That is a Schroers glare shield (STCd). Bob Schroers was a TIC170A member from Washington state, and is no longer with us. I won one as a door prize at my first 170 Convention in 1985 and it has been in my 170 ever since. To get it away from me you’d have to buy to whole airplane. IMHO, the panel just doesn’t look finished without it.

I bought one of these from Bob back about 1980. It finishes the panel off nice. You could get white or red lens. Bob did a great job on these, after almost 40 years, still looks like new.
