I believe that is Steve Grimsley’s panel, which would be a pretty good match for Lima Tan. I agree that the Matator Red on the main fixed panel appears brighter than that sprayed on the back of the plexi panel.Bruce Fenstermacher wrote:I think this panel is what your plane should look like but with some color correction. The Silver French Tan is reflecting a little to much light. The red behind the plexiglas is truer to Matador Red that the rest of the red which is too bright.

Probably to clear something installed by a previous owner. Not supposed to be there.

Re: IOWA'S 170
here is some Matador Red behind the peeling black paint
looks to be the same color as the panel behind the plexiglas area
now if I could just find the right Lima Tan color
flew to Red Oak Iowa Airport flight breakfast this am
averaged 71 nts down and 118 back!
wind was only 4 nts on the ground
but temperature today is 91F

Re: IOWA'S 170
Dave,
I've edited my entry here to include PPG's code for Lima Tan using their water-based EHP (Envirobase High Performance) or Deltron paint.

Re: IOWA'S 170
I noticed that the black paint on the yoke had a moist look to it
So, thinking that it was dirt or grime,
I gently rubbed it with a red grease rag
And the black paint came off fairly easily
This was just on the base of the yoke
I found that if I used my fingernail thru the rag
The black would come off and leave the red okay, but only in certain places
Is there some kind of cleaner that would remove the black and leave the matador red?
thanks

I think the paint was contaminated with the
lubricant that was used on the yoke rod
maybe if I smeared some of it over the black paint
and let it set for awhile
the black would come off?

Re: IOWA'S 170
Dave,
I removed my plastic overlay and took it the auto paint supply store to get a computer match of the paint on the back side of the overlay -- in my case Serge Blue. It's going to be difficult if not impossible to get the underlying Matador Red to look uniform after stripping or somehow removing the black paint layer. I think you'd be better off stripping it to bare aluminum and then applying a coat of primer and finish paint.

Re: IOWA'S 170
Dave, I don't think there is any magic formula that would work on all or even most circumstances for what you are trying to do. My suggestions would be light paint thinners such as mineral spirits and acetone. The key is softening the outer, likely enamel black without softening the likely lacquer matador red. However you might find, working fast lacquer thinner may remove the black and given the matador red is so old and hard, you have time to clean the thinner off before it effects the red. Crap shoot rely. Yet I removed paint that covered my plexi panel without the solvent eating into the plexi. So anythings possible. Another possibility, though it has been years since used any, there are paint strippers sold to hobbyists to strip enamel from plastic model cars. Might be just the ticket.

Re: IOWA'S 170
hi bruce
yes, i ended up using MEK
and just litely rubbing it with a soft rag
it took about 5-6x of doing this before the matador red showed through!
pic with next post
it dulled the matador paint a little but think that a little car wax will brighten it up.
I am making a bracket for my magnetic compass
to hook into the windshield
is this exceptable?
could someone post a picture of how they did this?
see everyone at Oshkosh!
