That's who required "convincing". When did you insure it for that amount, before or after 2001?

It was in July of 2005, when I bought N3477D.

Some more thoughts

Post by Romeo Tango »

I've been insuring cars with USAA since I started driving, and wouldn't change given their superb service and "officer's word is his bond" attitude. Same with my house insurance.

But not on my C170. They don't write the policy, they resell it, and my sense is they don't have the same flexibility to respond as quickly and proactively as they do with their other underwritten policies. It was also a lot more expensive than other folks I talked with because they are simply reselling - and cannot limit the risk pool through their historical gatekeeping of "military only".

There are some things to look for with the tailwheel insurance too - specifically if they permit soft and rough field operations. And operations at facilities "not in the AF/D". Those minor clauses can get you!

That would be after I feel I had to "educate" them about the increasing values of well-cared for airplanes.

i read this thread w/great interest!
i am impressed with how high
everyone insures their hulls!
i beginning to think that mine is
much too low at 30k.
it also appears that there is no
one best insurance to have.

IMHO, you are too low @ $30k. Ask yourself this question: would $30k replace that airframe? Even an average 170 (which yours looks to be better than) is more than $30k these days.

I agree with Doug, your plane must be worth more than $30K. Sure is pretty :!: I would check around and see what other 170 owners are insuring theirs for. BTW, how long have you had your plane? I didn't see you listed in the 170 directory. Maybe in my rush I missed it, but if you aren't a member we sure would like to have you as one :!: :!:

I finally got a good quote from AOPA via AIG (though I'm trying to get them to take the hull from 45k to 60k). Falcon was way high through Global. Travers was rediculous, and AUA wouldn't return my calls. $1250 twernt too bad in my opinion.
