Bird Man

While this isn't strictly 170 related, it would be of interest at any real airport's "Pilot Lounge".

Now Miles, if I could strap a couple of those units onto my gear legs I could get some short take offs, good climbs and keep up with the rest of you speedy guys!

Neat video.

Yep you'll be seeing that soon at a "Real Airport". Probably in Texas first then migrating as deep into the north country as far as Arkansas. This of course if it doesn't catch on first on the left coast.

Now lets see what part of CFR Title 14 will this fall under. Stall speed is to high for part 103 so it must be covered in part 91.

:D

I heard that one member is trying out a set of Jetboots strapped to the struts of his 170. He wants to be the fastest member in TEXAS

Since the boots didn't slide him on the truck bed, it doesn't look like they generate a whole lot of thrust, but I guess any thrust at all added our airplane's 270 lbs or so would be an improvement!

I happened to see a demonstration of those model turbine engines this summer. I'm sure there not all the same but the one I saw produced 18 pounds off thrust and was governed because the model plane would fly faster than the pilot could control it which is well over 200mph. Even at that he throttled back after takeoff.

They may be small but the sound they produce is just as much as the Lycomings in my BK117. You can't believe it comes from that little tube.

Oh yes, the guy said they cost $2500 a piece. He had 3 of them. 8O

18 pounds sound about right. Most of that from noise?

Hmmmm... if we assume 270 lb of thrust causes a 170 to go 120mph, then adding 36 lb should get us up to about 127mph or so....
