C-170 Generator

Post by Robert Eilers »

My 170B is equipped with a generator. I have noticed that it takes approximately 60+ seconds before the generator actually starts charging after starting the engine. As a result, I must wait for the Amp gauge to register before I turn equipment on. Is the delay I am experiencing normal? The generator works fine otherwise.

A generator will not charge until it is brought up to speed,...usually about 1200 rpm. Until that occurs, turning on your radios, lights, etc., will not hurt anything. Your battery will support everything until the generator comes up to speed and re-charges the battery. By the time you've flown a few minutes the battery is charged back up, if everything is healthy.
