I tried to search for this answer but must have been using the wrong words because I remember reading about this subject in the past, but I could not find it.

My question is on my 1952 C170B, the fuel selector valve was found to leak externally during my annual. I remember there was a difficult procedure for removing the valve and I would like to find that again. Also, I think somebody found a seal rebuild kit but I could not find that as well.

Any Help would be great

The original design tends to corrode from water sitting in it. Mine was dripping through the top shaft so I had mine rebuilt a few years ago. It started leaking again a few months later so I went with the McFarlane one. All machined aluminum and uses OEM o-rings. It is a bear to remove/install because of the two mounting bolts. My A/P installed rivet-nuts to make it easier to re-install.

Just tell your A&P NOT to follow the parts sequence in the IPC, it's wrong and your valve will not shut off.

Replaced mine with McFarlane last year. Tremendous pain the rear to remove and reinstall. Then I hit my stride and trying one more time installed it in about 90 seconds. Wish I could remember what I did!

You must have yourself on “fast-forward” to do that in 90-secs…. 90-mins is more like it…. IF the fuel is already drained out of the system.

I’ve found in the past, somethings come down to an individuals physical differences, as in thin hands, long fingers and more twistable tongues. Creating the floating doubler nut plate certainly makes things easier.

It is amazing how sometimes walking away and clearing your mind can make all the difference. I remember them telling us that in A&P school. Sometimes you just have to cross your toes and hold your tongue just right....

Yeah, walked away, took a break. Came back to it in a flow state and boom, done, easy. Scared myself a little!
