170 enthusiasts; I am looking for a LH Cowling Door - complete assembly for my ‘55 170B. Any suggestions and recommendations for where to source one? The PN is 0552002-9. Thanks very much, Jay

Good luck on finding a door-assy you can simply install. Almost without exception such doors are fabricated in the field, and are not as simple as one might think due to shape and conformity, not to mention the use of rivets in lieu of spot-welding. You might contact Mountain Airframe in Mena for help on this, as Member Del Lehman has experience with this.

I’d agree with George, it would be hard to find one that would fit. You might make it yourself or get a tin man to make it. If you look at the door its actually two pieces of metal easily fabricated but it takes a good hand to bond them together so it looks good and the final fit just takes patience, lots of patience filing away the top edge.

Jay,
As you can see in this thread there are several members here with amazing sheetmetal skills.

I once installed a used cowl door that fit remarkably well. You wouldn't do it as permanent repair because used doors will have all the wear and damage that you're looking to get rid of. But if your door is not airworthy and you need to buy time while you fabricate a new one, don't be afraid to try it. I've got a LH door that you can have for the cost of shipping. PM me if you're interested and I can send you some pictures.

You guys are an amazing resource! My door is not airworthy and I am looking to buy time while we’re waiting for fabrication of a new door. Please do share some pictures and I’m happy to pay shipping, etc. Thanks so much!

Here’s the door. It has no Hartwell latches, so I’ll also send a RH door that has latches you can swap. The door is painted in Krylon white.

Let me know if you want these. If you’re not currently an Association member, please consider joining, since these doors are worth more than the price of a membership.
