Airpath Compass had been hanging from windscreen for 40 + years. I liked it.

Sent pictures to Airpath and A/S - Catalog pictures of Compass woefully weak. Pictures of Compass brackets even worse. Just sell me what I have been using; just BRAND NEW! Never rec definite answers. Walked a away.

Purchased the new PAI 700. Vertical Card Compass . Will hang from Windscreen reinforcing center strip same location.

INstall could become quirky. PAR suggest replacing the steel 10-32 machine screws w brass or Stainless Steel. One screw holds the mount; replace one above and below on the center strip. Perhaps this will calm down the Aether that N. Telsa so fervently claimed.

5/8" L machine screw orig. hard to locate so the tip is to purchase pkg of 12 SS washers - purchase 3/4 " M Screws and use 2 SS washers under head of screws and now you have the 5/8 " L desired.

I hung the brackett - A/P IA will hang the compass and wire lighting - it has dual lamps - claims 4,000 hour life.

I'm sure you know that some SS alloys are magnetic (ferritic stainless) and some (austenitic) are not.

No I did not know that some SS is magnetic.

I like SS better than Brass; but if necessary will do brass.

just see if the SS can be picked up with a magnet before installation.

My SS screws were not ferritic - magnet would not pick up.

Secret to removing 60+ yr old Steel screws in Windscreen reinforcing Strip was to use sharp blade, pocket knife or Xacto to remove the paint build up in the Phillips screw head. How many of us have stripped out phillips head screws. Clean out the screw head and use a NEW phillips head #2 screw driver.

We were careful =- job took 20 minutes. Remove Steel and replace w Stainless.

Got satisfaction.

I will try to post a picture. May take some time.

No reason for other members to go through frustrating hours of research such a simple part.
You easily make a mistake and order the wrong part.

IOWA

Here is information I promised.

I purchased the Vert Card Magnetic Compass. P/N 10-00421
VERT CRD Compass PAI-700 14V Mfg is in Houston TX. Small company you can have a telcon with the prinicpal.

As to what Mounting bracket to use. Catalogs are not clear and I am sure pilots have ordered the wrong product numerous times. A/S Techs cautious and not convincing to me.

I have a good installation and this is the hanging bracket part number
PACMO-2CN
CUSTOM BRACKET
PAI-700 VCM COMPASS

Note that term Custom Brackett is part of the label.

I just used this same bracket (PACMO-2CN) to hang an Airpath C-2300 compass from my center strap. Even though the bracket is designed for a PAI vertical card compass, the Airpath compass fit with no alterations. I would expect that any 2 1/4" compass would fit. I ended up trimming the bracket at the red line in the picture to make it match the bottom edge of the compass.
