floats for C-170

Hi my name I Wally Hain member #9634 I have been a member since July 2014 but just registered for the for the forum. I own a 1954 Cessna 170B with a IO 360. I'm looking to find out if anyone knows of someone who has installed either EDO 2425 OR 2440 floats on a C-170B with a one time field approval. I have EDO 2000 but it's under floated. I would appreciate any info. TKS. Wally

Welcome! You say IO-360 and I start to salivate like Pavlov's dog! Is that the Stoot's Lycoming conversion or the Continental IO-360 conversion? I believe there is a rule here that on your second post you need to include a picture of your plane. :wink:

From the little I've read it seems that the only STC for the 2440 floats is for a C-170 with the 220 H.P. Franklin. Type in 2440, 2425, 2440s, or 2425s in the search box at the very top of your screen to see what has been said about these floats on this site.

Thanks Gary I will try that. I have the Continental IO 360 210 hp. I'm not Shure how to post a pic I will have to figure it out.

Gary can you get me the info on the STC you talked about with the 220 Franklin I don't believe the engine makes a difference. TKS Wally

It appears Seaplane Flying, Inc. did this one time STC in 1976 on a C-170B s/n 20807. Now looking in our directory by serial number one sees that whoever owns this plane is not a C-170 association member as the number is not listed there. But owners of s/n 20805 and s/n 20809 are members; they own N2653D and N2657D respectively. That means the N number of s/n 20807 must be N2655D. As you can see here it is owned by a fellow in Cantwell, Alaska. Here is a link to his e-mail address, phone number, and fax number.

Do you have Tom Andersons "XP Mods" STC for your TCM IO-360 conversion or do you have a one time STC by someone else? I'm just curious because I did that mod using Toms STC and engine mount. The installation of the TCM IO-360 engine in the C-170 sure does make the C-170 into the airplane it is capable of being. Greatest thing since sliced bread!

Give some thought to the gross weight issues. Many of the "Approved" floats have 2100 lb gross (Floats) I believe that the issues are based on the shape of the vertical stab and elevators although Wipline got a 2200lb approval on their 2100's. Just say'in

I once-upon-a-time researched installing a float kit in my 170B so I could join all the float flyers in AK in the Summer time. If I recall correctly, the gross weight restriction was related to the poor climb rate. Seems like the aircraft needed to be able to climb at least 200 or 300 fpm or some such criteria to achieve certification.

It is STC approved for Aerocet 2200's with a gross weight of 2200. Horsepower is 145 to unrestricted and I have a letter from the ACO for that. Aerocet says they plan to make kits this fall, the price is around 32,000.00 for everything if you already have a float kit installed
