I've been thinking of a 180 as well for float Ops, I would have to sell the 170 and the XP but I have also received advice from far more knowledgeable individuals than me which somewhat mirrors George's comments. Ah...to win the lotto...

Why not put floats on the XP? I have a friend in Alaska flying one on floats, it makes an excellent float plane.

Another good reason to put it on floats, the nose wheel goes away! You do know about the 172XP float conversion STC don't you?

No, I'm not aware of much when it comes to floats other than you can never have too much power. For puttering around the 170 does most missions I undertake for less. Yes I'd like to go faster, higher and be able to operate on wheels, floats and skis. If I had a brain, I should have bought a 170 with a float kit and put Dicks favourite engine in it when I first started out, shoulda coulda, woulda!

If any of you guys get really hepped up and drcide to put an IO-360 Continental powered C-170 on floats, I have just the prop for the job,It's a McCauley
2 A 34 C 203 Overhauled Hub with new 88 inch blades. This is a C-180 seaplane prop with the low pitch stops set a little lower for a 210 HP engine. I originally bought it to put (Bootlegged) on my IO-360 powered C-170B so that during the annual C-180/C-185 fly-in at Johnson Creek I ould out howl those guys when the engine wound up to 2800 turns. It should have been audible in Nome, AK, and made the Ponderosa Pines shed their needles.

I pulled out the C180 this afternoon to shoot some photos of the new project. Ouch!
I think the biggest difference between the two is the weight. I know we all know they are heavier, but man alive is it ever a bear trying to roll the C180 around. The C170 is like a paper kite now compared to the C180 w/ the 84 gal tanks full. Night and day.
Im going to miss the ease of the little guy...

Anyone flying along with you is going to have to wear welders goggles to protect their eyes from the sun reflecting off your plane Very nice looking
