AQUA 2200 FLOATS

Post by akgreg »

I want to install a set of Aqua 2200 floats on my 170. They were previously installed and field approved on a different 170 back in 1997. I have the old 337 from that field approval and can't get / find any other documentation to back up that install. I have contacted Aqua and they don't have any paperwork to help my cause. I know the EDO 2000's are on the TC (under floated) and Wipline 2100's are STC'd, but they are hard to find used and WAY to expensive new for my budget. Help?! Does anybody have these installed on their 170? Does anybody have any ideas that would help me. I understand the can of worms I open when dealing with the FAA....I got a field approval for 850 x 6 tires last fall....but I would still like to try seeing that I can get these floats for a reasonable cost. Yes I have the 180hp. Thanks for any help. Please PM

If you don't already have some Aqua 2200s, the PK 2300s are approved. If the Aqua factory can't help, that would be quite a battle.

Have edo 2130s, used on the C172, ever been put on a C170? That would probably be ideal.

2130's are very hard to find and still pose the same problems of the AQUA's....getting a field approval. The choices for the 170 with no additional issues are: EDO 2000 (on the TC and reasonable cost) - Wipline 2100 (STC'd and hard to find used) - PK B2300 (STC'd and very hard to find). I know this is a shot in the dark finding someone with AQUA's on their airplane AND them have all the paperwork just waiting for me to submit it. I can dream can't I.........

Ed Peck in Canada has 2150 tubes that bolt up to 2000 rigging.

Based on the standard gross weight on floats formula... 2000x2= 4000. 4000/1.8= 2222.22, why are Edo 2000s considered too small for a C170? I think the manual says 2106 lbs maximum for a seaplane.

There is not one pilot that I have talked with that said the EDO 2000's had plenty of float. All said they seemed under floated
when flying at max. The floats seemed very low in the water and having a little extra float is a good thing. Like I stated before, I am
just trying to see if I can get these (Aqua 2200) approved on my plane. Thanks for responding - any input helps.......well almost any!

Have you thought of putting a set of Edo 2000 data plates on the Aqua 2200s?

Dick, ...you are a funny guy. But, even at the Alamo there was a line drawn in the sand to provide a place to stand for honest men. I know which side you'd stand on in a pinch...

.... but please be careful. Lots of us younger guys are gullible, and we don't want to endorse things patently dishonest or illegal.

(Besides, putting the incorrect datatag on good Aqua 2200s would render them to the junkpile, and they'd still be illegal on a 170.)

I've flown my C170 on Edo 2000s for 16 years, enjoying their safety and performance. It's easy to tell, when taxiing on the water if you're not balanced or too heavy. I questioned their legal limit because it appears that, mathematically, they should be enough of a float, for a 170, unless it's being overloaded. It isn't a Maule.

OK. George doesen't like the idea of changeing the data plates on the Aqua floats so maybe thats not such a good idea after all.

All of this would be a real simple fix if some kind soul would sell me their Wip 2100's or PK B2300's for
a FAIR price. And by FAIR, I mean CHEAP! Ha.....that does not happen much when it comes to airplane stuff!

When I was up in Alaska in about 1948 a guy offered to sell me a set of Edo 2000s, for my L-5, for $1,200. The bite was that Edo wanted $500 for the L-5 fittings, It was just more than I could afford on a sergeants pay. The airplane only cost me $2,000.
I sold it in 1952 for $900, out of license, in San Antonio,TX.
