Az, do you have pictures of your 170's engine and trubo installation you could post here?Azpilot wrote:Thats pretty good.N9149A wrote:Jaime,
I know because I HAVE THE FASTEST 170 having indicated over 180 in level flight with reduced power.
(and being my plane is maroon, a close shade to red, it only stands to reason right George? )

The fastest I've gotten mine was 160kts true at 20,000 with the turbo on and sucking oxygen.

Give me about three weeks, and I'll get you pictures of the entire engine bay.
I'm stuck in Arizona and my partner doesn't have a Camera.
But what I have is a TSIO-360-E on what looks like a Cessna 172XP engine mount that has been modified.

Do you have any problem keep the cylinder head temps up at 20,000'? Do you have some kind of controlable cowl flaps?

I've got controllable cowl flaps.

Re: Fastest 170 in the fleet!
Azpilot- WOW I love that airplane. Is it still in experimental category? Any chance of it ever becoming a standard category airplane? Is that a manual waste gate control next to the cowl flap lever? How big are your fuel tanks? Do you have enough rudder on takeoff? COOL!
Re: Fastest 170 in the fleet!
Someone has really spent a lot of time/effort marrying different model Cessna's together to make that airplane. What model Cessna is the basis of that forward cabin interior-section? It resembles the 206 a bit.

Its in the experimental category for having the turbo.mod cessna wrote:Azpilot- WOW I love that airplane. Is it still in experimental category? After I get the Condition Inspection completed, then I'm gonna work on getting the STC for whole aircraft. 2 FAA Maintenance chiefs said that it wouldn't be that difficult to get the STC.
The waste gate controller is above the cowl flap lever.
Its got a Javelin tank in the back with a pump, so usable is 60.3 gallons.
As for rudder, the Rudder trim helps...alot.
My partner had the pleasure of flying it and he was incredibly surprised with the takeoff performance. He dropped 2 notches of flap and departed the ground at 1300fpm with 3/4 tank of fuel all the way up to 5000ft.
I still have yet to fly it.

What kind of gymnastics did you have to do to get the fuel-system modified to re-locate the fuel selector? And did that play any part of the Experimental category? (Or is that part of the re-engine-ing STC/approval.)Azpilot wrote:gahorn wrote:Someone has really spent a lot of time/effort marrying different model Cessna's together to make that airplane. Re: Fastest 170 in the fleet!
Az,
I notice that the cockpit air vent intakes are further out on the wing than normal 170 wings and the fuel tank covers appear larger than 170 standard which begs the question are your wings 175 or later model 172?

Re: Fastest 170 in the fleet!
I didn't build this aircraft, I bought it.
The guy that built it was Johnny Williams in Texas.
I'll go through the boxes of documents and engineering documents to get you the exact, but I think I remember seeing that they were 175 wings...which I think are R172 wings. It has electric flaps because rigging them to be mechanical with the fuel selector valve there proved to be difficult.
The Fuel system is pretty simple. Left for left tank, right for right tank, both for the aux tank, off for off.
Other things that make it experimental including this really awesome double heat exchanger for defrost and cabin heat, Fuel selector valve out of a Viking, Rudder Trim set up, Cowl Flaps.
I am pretty happy that it did come with the factory float fittings, the modern panel and yokes, scott tail wheel, BRS pull handles, 24 Volt setup with gel batteries, and has a set of gear legs off of a 54 170B.

Aha! NOW I know the deal! (Johnny Williams is one of our members who used to own a salvage yard and entertained himself with all kinds of interesting modifications for his enjoyment. He is still around and attended the Galveston convention. He also still handles the "Hatch Latch" door catch parts.)
