Engine Baffling

Post by dlords »

We have a early model 170B with the older style cowling, and baffling setup. If you order a new baffle set out of like wag areo or spruce they don't have the shrouds that go over the top of the cylinders, what they do have is the baffling that goes on the outside of the cylinders on both sides. Has anyone removed the shrouds and just gone with the baffling on the sides of the cylinders and have it work good? Also does anyone have an extra sump baffle that they are will to sell. A damaged on will even do, just to use it as a template.

The early airplane (170/170A/'52-170B) had an internal "air box" type of cooling. The '53 170B and susequent had a "pressure" cowl. There are numerous differences that may be missed on first glance.
The pressure cowl did not use "clam-shell" upper cowling. (The early cowl suffers from additional stress due to it's hinges and latching mechanisms when placed under pressure.) The aft cowl of the pressure cowl is different than the early baffle, and the inter-cylinder baffling and sump baffling is different.

Air Frames Inc., (907-892-8244) worked with several TIC170A Members to develop a complete, strengthened (stronger/better than the Univair/Spruce/WagAero) pressure-cowl replacement baffle set and has been working to finish a complete early-type air-box cooling baffles kit, which can be purchased either directly from them, or through their distributor AWI, Inc., (Aerospace Welding Inc.) in Minneapolis. AWI is a supporter of our Association and has donated items toward our support in the past. Ask for Charlie Feld or Tom Heid. Tell then we sent you. -George

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)
