On July 15, 1923 President Harding drove in the Golden Spike signifying completion of the Alaska Railroad. This event occurred at milepost 413.7 at the northern end of the 702 foot Mears Memorial truss bridge. Returning from the Alaska trip, Harding died suddenly of a heart attack on August 2, 1923.

I'd love to fly to Alaska again to dig into the other 99.44% that I didn't get to see on the way to and from the 2000 170 Convention in Anchorage, and I'd love to fly to the Bahamas sometime. But for Karen and I, either trip would have to be at least 2 years out, as our 2007 vacation budget (time as well as $$) is already tapped out with plans for a week in the Lake Louise/Banff area in addition to the 170 Convention in Galveston.
Keep the good ideas coming and hopefully we'll synch up sooner or later!

Hey ! since you will have the plane to get there King Salmon is a must. Fishing is great and nowhere near as congested as Kenai. It is through Lake Clark pass over Illiamna Lake ( the largest lake in the largest state) at the edge of Katmai Park. Large numbers of brown bears, caribou, moose, the home of the red salmon fishing industry.
If I have my project completed "57' 172 to a taildragger the wife and I are going to Alaska the end of June for about a mounth. Having owned a lodge in AKN I would be happy to furnish advice about flying to Bristol Bay.
