Overhauled C145

Post by Robert Eilers »

The C145 in the 170B i recently purchased was overhauled in 2003 and now has 100 hrs on it. The previous owner found it necessary to replace one cylinder shortly after the overhaul. The cylinders are Milleniums. I have one that tends to wet the plug. Engine runs well, but I find I have to do full throttle runup to clear fouled plug-usually first flight of the day. I replaced the mineral oil in the engine shortly after I bought it - around 90 hrs. Can I expect the wet cylinder to seat with time, or am I just dreaming?

I've heard several complaints about such problems with Millenium cylinders. I replaced a cylinder on my 600 hour engine last year with a new Millenium and ever since, I've got a lower plug that fouls sometimes and requires clearing during runup or it clears shortly after takeoff. grrr.

I built 2 engines with the last 2 sets of Superior cyclinders. both sets glazed before the rings seated..

I now use ECT Titan Cerminll. the last engine I built useing them ran 5 hours, then we changed oil and checked for debree, and repaired an oil leak, refilled with 8 qts Phillips 20-W-50 and the engine went 50 hours with out using a full qt. (we have the cessna spin on filter)

ECI requires that Phillips 20-W-50 be used from start up to TBO, with the first 10 hours at 75% or higher.. it works.

Just to help keep the "2 cent" jar full------

I had excellent results and service from Superior "Millenium" cylinders on my last C-145 overhaul and would use them again.

Have had two differnt Lyc 0-320's that were recently overhauled with new Milleniums and never had a lick of trouble out of them. Ditto for my ex-140A (C90) that had been topped with 3 new Milleniums.

I broke in the new Lycoming on the Phillips 20-50 and it really worked well. One strange thing is that I never saw a CHT drop in the first hour whereas all other engines I've broken in have had a 20-30 degree drop within the first hour. Just spoke with another person who had the same observation. I'm a believer in the Phillips for breakin.
