Halogen landing light

Post by DuaneShockey »

Recently I met a 170 owner (not a member) in Antacortes Wa. at his airport there. He explained to me that his halogen landing light bulb that replaced the old 100 watt leading edge light needed no "device/adapter" in the electrical supply line. Do any of you know what the brand and part number is for such a bulb that will replace my standard GE 100 watt bulb?? Duane Shockey duaneshockey@outlook.com

Duane, the 4509 lamp is the incandescent standard. If you want a halogen lamp, you want a 4509Q.
Here is one brand (there are others): https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... kkey=15432
'53 B-model N146YS SN:25713
50th Anniversary of Flight Model. Winner-Best Original 170B, 100th Anniversary of Flight Convention.
An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)

John Deere LED lights are direct "bolt-in" or "screw-in." Model RE56117 is a Spot Beam that makes a good landing light. RE561116 is the Flood Beam that makes a fine taxi light. All for less than $100.

Duane, do you actually have a leading edge light in your ragwing? I thought most ragwings had the motorized PAR46 light that extended out of the bottom of the wing when you turned it on.

Too much heat generated in filament type landing lights . I have been using some LED,s from”goodies for pilots” for nearly 3 years now , they work great , always on and on wig wag . Very little power drain and operate cool. Their price has increased some what since I purchased mine but still worth the money .

The 4509 is 13v, 100w which draws just over 7.5 amps and is rated at 110 mean spherical candle power. The 4509Q is also 13v, 100w and therefor draws the same 7.5 amps but it is rated at 140 mean spherical candle power. I wonder if one could tell the difference of 30 candle power? The bigger difference is in the lab life of each bulb, the 4509 being 25hrs vs the 4509Q at 100 hrs. I just read a review of a purchase of 2 - 4509Q lamps that stated the first blew out in 20 minutes, the second lated 20 hrs.

In Nov 2020 I installed the LED landing light I ordered from "Goodies for Pilots". It throws fantastic lighting, so much better than the old GE4509.
