Flew my first cross country today
Guys, I flew my 170A from Hammond, LA to Newberry, SC today. My first real cross country, a little over 500 NM. Man am I tired! Most of the trip was at 5500' so I leaned the mixture for the first time. It's was a bit spooky when the engine RPM suddenly dropped on my first attempt. I quickly developed a keen ear for RPM and a micrometer touch!

Jason, it was about 5 hours flying time and almost 7 hours total time with two stops. An adventure for sure.

Congrats! While a few hairy chested manly men may disagree, 5 hours hand flying is a long day for most pilots. Good job.

I stopped at KGZH Evergreen, AL and KOPN Thomaston GA. KOPN was having a benefit event giving rides and a big twin was unloading skydivers at 12000' so it was a bit busy when I landed. I was entering downwind when I hear "skydivers are out over Thomaston..." Not knowing the rules I reasoned I could get to the ground sooner than they would. As I was grounding my 170 at the pump they began dropping all around. It was pretty cool to see.KG wrote:Where did you wind up making your stops? just curious.....

Wish I had been there to greet you in Thomaston but I was working. Yes, those parachutes are cool to watch and as far as I can tell the rule is that you just fly a normal pattern and they come down in the center. I NEVER fly across mid field there because of them. They jump pretty much every weekend that the weather permits.
Newberry SC is where I stopped a few years ago and the nice man from the FAA gave me a ramp inspection. Left me with a bad impression of the Charlotte FSDO.
When will you fly back?

I'll be working again this Saturday... If you stop at Thomaston again you can bet the jumpers will be active on the weekend. Just fly a normal pattern even if you have to go all the way around the airport and don't cut across mid field and you won't hit the chutes...Onewinglo wrote:Keith, I plan to head back Saturday, weather permitting.KG wrote:When will you fly back?
