Congratulations! Where is the photo?

Mine is a '52 as well and has been in the family for just over a year ;)

We're down in Maryland (W00) and had the opportunity to fly up your way once last year.
The lobster was so good, I'm sure we will be making more trips next year.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Greg,

Welcome as a NEW 170 owner! Sounds like you are going to make some nice upgrades to the plane. We will be looking for you to show it off at a future summer annual convention. 8) Why you might even win a trophy after all the work you will have done. 8O After the Longmont, CO convention this summer, the 2013 & 2014 convention sites will be moving in your direction; so, keep them in mind. And, as you may have notice on the forum -- ask a question if you have a question or concern about your plane. That's what we are here for. Jim

Congratulations, a very nice looking aircraft. I understand your eagerness but would recommend one thing. Inspect every inch of it yourself. You never know how it was maintained in the past. This is the best way to learn your aircraft and will ensure there are no big surprises at your first annual or worse, when you are flying. Far too many pilots are not familiar with their aircraft and waste money on unneeded conveniences when there are important airworthiness issues being totally ignored. Learn what you are allowed to do yourself and what you have to get a mechanic to do. Be critical of what anyone else does to YOUR aircraft. The 170 is famous for being a great plane without any mods. Just fly it and enjoy it first.

Looks like the air intake grilles are missing. Hard to really see in the picture. There were more '52 models built than any others. Maybe the salvage yards could find some.

BL, you have better eyes than I do. I can't see through the spinner. Usually the 2" air scoope your talking about is on the left side behind the grill closer to the center of the airplane. There usually isn't any on the side we can see in the picture. Though to be honest I've made a study of these scoops and there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason. Some planes have them some don't.

Bruce,
I was referring to the horizontal grilles that install on the right and left side openings in front of the cylinders. The '52 model cowling was the last year they were used.

Oh the grilles. Sorry BL. Yes very hard to see but I think they are there. These grilles are also still available as long you have lots of SSSSSSSSSS.
