Purchased the great 170B in September. Removed the rear seat to look at the
aux fuel tank and saw these two additional seat rails. Wondering what they
may have been used for. Cargo tie down? Small jump seat?

Measure the track width. If it is 12-3/4” center to center, a C206 or C207 middle seat was probably installed there.

Kenmore Air Harbor sells an STC for the C206 middle seat conversion for C180/185 and it also works on the C170.

However, that is not the STC-specified seat track or position.

Looks like someone bootlegged that installation. Did Dick Lemmon ever own that airplane?

N8018A. Don’t know about Dick Lemon. I’ll measure the distance between rails tomorrow.
It’s a nice professional install but we couldn’t find anything in the logs about it.
Just completed the install of the Avionx ADS-B on the left wing
Easy install but a fair amount of paperwork goes with it. The left strobe
gave up the ghost so the timing was perfect.

I’ve researched a couple of jump seat STC manufacturers but none have anything compatible with these rails. Guess I’ll use them for cargo tie downs with the Atlee Dodge seat rail attachments.

The extra seat rails should be documented in the aircraft records as to who/what/where they are purposed and also their approval basis. (But you knew that. There are more than a few of these old airplanes with undocumented mods. A discerning IA would likely require their removal or their documentation...."Found installed, etc"... or at least a placard restricting their use.)
