Engines for Cessna 170/172 Aircraft

Post by 170C »

We have read about and seen quite a variety of engines installed on the Cessna 170's and 172's. While this is a 170 forum, I know there are some forum members that have a lot of experience/knowledge. Has anyone known of a Continental O-470 being installed on a 170/172. The largest ones I have knowledge of are the IO-360 Continentals. Just curious.

Yep. More or Less. It's called a L-19 Bird dog.

N3JX (the one that was for sale on Barnstormers for years) had a GO-435 installed under a field approval before the Hawk XP nose was grafted on, apparently.

An O-470 weighs about 100 pounds more than an O-300. 170s don't need even more weight on the nose.
