Secondary Seat Stop SEB07-5 rev 6

Post by Bruce Fenstermacher »

It seems Cessna has extended the date it will reimburse an owner for installation of their secondary seat stop on the pilots side to December 31, 2023.. See SEB07-5 Revision 6.

I have had mine installed for several years now and find it non-intrusive and a BIG piece of mind it is there. Even Leroy, who scoffed at it initially, has forgotten about it. I highly recommend it to all Cessna owners.

The 172C I bought last year came equipped with it (although the interior shop who subsequently re-ragged the interior mistakenly re-installed it on the copilots seat and therefore mounted the copilots seat on the left side.... so I had to switch it all back around so the release-handle was on the outboard seat leg.) It was a simple matter and it seems to work very well and virtually invisible for practical purposes. Sufficiently so that I'm convinced to have it installed on the 170 also. The ICAs have changed slightly, so the new instructs have you toss the old ICA and replace them with the new ICA.

I've had mine for years with no issues. Glad to have it. I'm more concerned about the passenger/co-pilot grabbing the yoke should that seat slide backwards. I have those Stop deals, but would prefer Cessna opt to pay for the secondary seat stop on that seat as well. Fat chance

Requesting advice from those more experienced: 62C does NOT have the secondary stop. I certainly understand the rationale for having it installed. Just got out of annual which would have been the perfect time to have it done. Suggestions? Do I run out immediately and have it done? Next time it's in the shop? Next annual? Does Cessna reimburse for a portion or all of the cost?

Cessna reimbursed all of mine, but it had to be done at a Cessna Authorized Service Center. There is one in town, and it took them about a day. Lead time on the parts was a few months. If you have a SC nearby I would just get it done.

DEM, thanks for the reply. My shop is Cessna Certified. I think I'll give them a heads-up to order the parts and have them waiting and then I'll let them tell me when they have a break in their schedule to fit me in. In the meantime I'll research how the reimbursement process works.

Thanks, all, for surfacing this.

Brian, seems you have a plan. I just wanted to add some things I've only heard have happened with this.

First it is important to understand there are two costs. Parts AND Installation. When the program first started several years ago it was pretty clear the only way to get the parts FREE was to have them installed by a Cessna certified shop and then Cessna would reimburse the same shop installation time to a point. A win win for Cessna shops once they figured out how to install them. Initially the muddy water was would Cessna pay for both the pilot AND copilot seat. There are stories of both installations being covered at the start. This I think has been put to rest and Cessna will only give out pilot seat stops. They'd be happy to sell you the second stop however.

As the program went on it seems more stories where heard that one could get the parts from a Cessna certified shop FREE but not have the shop install the parts, rather the owner, who was usually an A&P, did the install. Some of these Cessna parts places might have been Yingling and or Hill Aircraft.

If your shop has done one of these before, it will take no time. If they haven't, the first hour will be spent trying to figure out what instructions they should follow for your installation.

Had mine done 4-5 years ago by Eagle Aviation in Columbia, SC. They sent me an e-mail when parts came in. Flew over, took them about three hours and I was on my way. Did a great job, no out of pocket. Works good, don't even know it's there.

In 2011 I received a flyer from Cross Country Aviation at Lancaster TX airport (KLNC) advising that they could install the Cessna Seat Stop in my plane at no charge. All I had to do was give them my registration # and s#. They would order the parts and upon receipt of them they would contact me to set up an appointment to do the installation. Upon receipt of the parts we did set an appointment and I flew over and asked how long it might take to do the installation. They suggested I walk over to the airport cafe and have a hamburger, then come back. 45 minutes later l walked back into their hangar to find the installation completed. So in a Cessna 170, 172, 175, 180 if they are saying two or more hours, they are doing so to bulk up the time they are charging Cessna.
Mine has worked perfectly since installation and my cost was the flight from KGPM to KLNC (18.2 nautical) and the cost of a burger & drink!

Ron, easier to just go to a Cessna shop. No money out of pocket.

Not one anywhere close anymore. Paul Fornet’s was one of the biggest Cessna dealers in the nation at one time because of seaplanes. Sold and now no one in La. is even interested. So I am not sure where I would go??? Ron

Just another data point on this. About 3 years ago I called the closest Cessna service center to me at that time (in Lawrence, MA, as I was living in MA at the time) and the service manager did not have a problem sending me the pilot side kit (i,e, just the parts) for no charge, including shipping. No invoicing and then reimbursement like Ron says Yingling requires. So I guess it depends on the service center.

The kit is easy to install, with the hardest part being (as Bruce mentions) wading through the instructions to sort out the info and figures that apply to the C-170 models. Doing it is easy.
