You're welcome Kyle-
I checked today and the sprockets are 15/64 which if the engines will top out at 20,000rpm, yields 150.96mph. Don't know if I will ever open it up but I plan on taking it right up to my "OH SH#T" limit.

It was very fortunate to find the original builder still interested in working on his products after all these years. Plus, he either has or knows where to get any and all of the parts needed for the job. That would be the impossible part for me. It sure came out nice.

Those Dusenburgs were quite the automobile in their day.

Obviously the green one, George, would have been the faster one

Arash-
They must sweep those tracks with a toothbrush, even dust could crash a bike in a turn like that. I have a lot of respect for anyone who would put themselves in that position. I question their sanity but respect them none the less.

The Lord invented motorcycles, there're the quickest way to convert an atheist :D . Been riding since I was 13. Loved the older bikes, I love the newer machines for their safety and responsiveness. Haven't found a better fitting machine than my present 125HP BMW. Thought of getting a newer 175HP bike but I just don't have the same mind speed and reflexes anymore. Thinking I'll hopefully be go down the same road, in the same fashio, as BL .

I didn't know that Vespa made a 175 HP model! 8O

blueldr wrote:There seems to be some prurient interest in my Vespa motor scooter from certain members. Please be advised that my "Solo" Vespa has been "Hors de combat" for about three or four weeks now. One of my flying buddies has been doing some maintenence and modification on it and it is taking him a lot longer than I had planned. He is also installing an Italian Stebel Nautilus Air Horn, purported to produce 139db. of sound, for the purpose of hastening old ladies in the pedestrian cross walks.
My other Vespa, an exact twin, is still in the throes of the installation of a sidecar. I am having to have a machine shop make me some parts for a steering damper installation inasmuch as I have found the scooter unrideable due to an extremely severe shimmy without a damper system. I have been anxious to get the sidecar up and going since I have twice gone on my ass on the solo bike and am unable to pick it back up by myself. The damn thing weighs over three hundred pounds and thats just too much for me at my age. It's kind of embarrassing when traffic gets stopped and backed up because an old fart is laying in the street along side of his dead motor scooter. Thank god for young guys who stop and help.
If and when I get my Italian Stallions back in service, I'll try to post a picture of them, if I live that long.

More engine porn, so long ago I rebuilt this guy twice. A real education in patience and precision, it only comes into time (because of odd number of teeth on lay and vertical shaft gears) once every 16 revolutions and each combustion chamber volume is set using a graduated burette.

John, Forgive my ignorance. How was this volume changed? I assume the goal was to match each chamber volume with the others but why would one be different than the next?

OK, now it makes sense why we haven't heard from the 27% Scale 170 project for a long time.

Gary,
The variable in volume are due to casting differences in both the heads and the pistons and also very hard to cut valve pockets exactly the same from one piston to the next. We did do Cosworth cylinder heads as Arish mentioned and still checked the volume with the engine assembled. On the Porsche the initial volume is adjusted by metal spacer rings below the cylinder skirt base and then fine adjustment by removing metal from the head.

Picture the (sad) day the car returned to Germany with its new owner!

Very interesting! I’m astounded by the technical talent so many of the members here have.

So if you’re milling the pistons to match valve pockets where do you remove metal to match piston weight? I imagine at the rpm these engines turn everything moving internally is matched weight-wise down to a fraction of a gram.

Very hard, however it did allow me to build my 170. Wish I could have figured out a way to do both.
