Aviation Trivia Question

Post by canav8 »

I thought I would throw this trivia question out there. NO GOOGLE CHEATERS need to answer.
Grab a cup of coffee and read this.
What type of aircraft was used in the longest duration flight in aviation history?
Here is a clue. It flew 64 days 22 hours 19 minutes aloft.

Scroll down for the answer

Here is a great link on the flight. Enjoy!

Was it an Aeronca Sedan? Did not check but I think that sticks in my mind. Bill K

I thought it was a 172 with an O-300.
They rigged up a way to fly low and take on fuel and oil from a truck in the desert? I remember reading it somewhere and seeing a picture

Cessna 172. i read about that a month or so ago. I think that plane is hanging in some airline terminal somewhere in the southwest. I think the article said they quit when the engine had worn down so much it was hard to climb away after refueling. What I do remember in the article is the pilot said that if he ever gets the inclination to do it again he is going to climb into a barrel with a vacuum cleaner!
Keep your speed up, Blackhawk on final behind you.

I knew it was the Hacienda Hotel 172, hanging in the Las Vegas airport. After googling, I now know that an Aeronca Sedan held the previous record.

Here's to the C-145/O-300! In my experience, even when they break they keep running!

To all,
The correct answer was the Cessna 172. Here is a video link of the story. It is an amazing feat. The record before that was set in an Aeronca Sedan. It was also an amazing feat of 50 days.
This flight is still a record holder when you omit space flight but still note worthy aviation moment in history.
Hope you enjoy.
