That news article is pretty much correct, though the site was about 10 NNW of yerington, not in it.
In short, the 2 aircraft were Tom Weiss' 170 and a small experimental called a savanna, which looks to the untrained eye like a zenith high wing.
Tom took off shortly before Tyler, and they somemow collided on downwind. a number of us saw the aircraft fall out of sight behind the hill a half mile or so from where we were standing. Dozens of people immediately went to help on foot and in various vehicles. No one I talked to at the scene saw the collision.
