PLACARDS

Post by 170C »

I thought I would make some required placards for my C-172 so looked at the TCDS. Regarding flaps, it says---"FLAPS-Pull to Extend" then "Takeoff Retract 0 deg", "1st notch 10 deg" Landing 0 deg-40 deg" Curious if that is stating one "should" use 10 deg's for takeoff? I normally do so, but nothing is stated regarding soft or short field takeoffs.
There is a note below this data that states "Avoid slips with flaps extended" So apparently that means even with 10 degrees. The larger horizontal/vertical/elevator does not permit slips with any flaps as has been discussed much lately.
I have never understood the reason for the placard stating---"Switch to single tank operation immediately upon reaching altitudes above 5000 feet" Its my understanding C-170's/172's (early) recommend takeoff's to set the fuel selector to BOTH.

I recognize that my plane is a 172, not a 170, but practically anything applying to the B model 170 also applies to the early 172.

Just curious what comments might be regarding the above.

Frank, the early 172's had the warning to switch to single tank ops above 5K to avoid a possible rough engine due to vent-line issues. Those airplanes had one underwing vent which was tied to the left tank...which was in SERIAL tied to the right tank. This arrangement could result in poor venting with both tanks in operation above 5k MSL (low barometric pressures.)
There was a service kit which alleviated the problem, SK172-32 , which I seem to recall merely installed vented fuel caps in both tanks.

I've attached SK172-31B to AD 72-07-02 here. It involves adding vent lines in the rear door post area. (SK172-32 does the same thing for the long range tanks).
