Assuming you still have the original tinnerman anchor nuts in your wing, you need the #8 size of these in 1/2-inch length.

Or maybe go whole hog, and inspect and go over all your non structural hardware with a kit such as this one

Ah the slippery slope of aircraft self help, could you possibly be only a few screws away from a “ D” check ? :)
And then, might you need all those parts ?.

Not sure of others experience, but I have found that ordering a "screw kit" for a specific airplane. I use a fairly small amount of the items. I find it better to (try) to identify what screws are needed in vrs locations and order a supply of them. Otherwise I end up with a lot of screws I never need.

I think there some merit to what you’re saying Frank especially if it’s a poorly assembled kit. Nothing worse than getting bags of “ A” machine screws. If it’s a good kit, I think it’s nice to have spares.

These Tinnerman fasteners wear out or break after decades of use (in and out every year). The only way to replace these is to pull the fuel tank .. Ugh !

I got tired of owning hundreds of screws I’ll never use so found a supplier (non aviation) that offers the exact same hardware in buyer-selectable quantities at much better prices. This has allowed me to stock up on those I use without having to deal with an “airplane specific” pack which is ... Not airplane-specific but actually airplane-generic.

been slowly polishing my 170
been using Nuvite G7 and then had planned to use C then S
but...have found that using just G7 gives the plane a nice shine
and that cool old 'patina' look
so may just use G7 only!
a mirror shine is fantastic but almost looks 'too good'
i think i'll leave this look for the best airplane awards people
after all the work that goes into producing it, they deserve it!!

a comment about buying airplane screw kits
i am not a believer in this either
but i do tend to overstock hardware which tend to fall off my plane
when i lost my 1st wing nut off the cowl
i bought 2 dozen of them!!

these are my favorite planes at Oshkosh
the completely'untouched' ones
this one was on the very last row in the south forty
one could see the green primer in places where the paint had been worn away
very cool
if i had my way
this plane would have been in the 1st row!

Dave, I'm with you here. My own 170 is a diamond in the ruff. One of my favor it 170s I've seen was owned by the late Jim Snyder. We would see Jim and Joyce nearly every convention, and to most they brought their grandson. Many of these conventions they traveled in their '55 170B. It was a working plane. Jim lived on a ranch in Nebraska. He used it to oversee his ranch. The plane was a tool for him though I think he may have enjoyed it more than a tractor. I last saw his 170 in San Diego. His grandson and another grandson of a member where playing on the tires. Jumping from one to another. They didn't care whether the paint was faded or there was a line of bird poop from leading to trailing edge every 2ft on top of the wing.

When I asked Jim about the custom bird applique' he laughed. Said he kept the plane in his barn with the tractors and the birds do all the work. I asked how long his runway was and he laughed again. Said he doesn't have a runway, he lands on his driveway. I asked how long that was. He said 7 miles.

To me, his grandson and maybe Jim, his plane was magic. He used it for work. He used it to travel and to share that with his wife and grandkids and it allowed me, a north easterner to meet and enjoy the company of someone who worked a ranch with an airplane, kept it in his barn and had a 7 mile driveway to land on.

Oh and BTW that beautiful 180 looked familiar. I looked up the registration. It's owned by a friend of mine here in PA I haven't seen for more that 10 years as our lives have moved in different directions. Good to see John is getting to Osh.
