Where can I find this tailwheel part?

Post by dstates »

Hey, 170 Association.
Does anyone know where I can purchase the pads shown in the image of the original tailwheel that are labeled #11, part number 0442119-1?

Thanks,
Doug

I made my own out of excess cowl baffle rubber. First lot made lasted only 8 years and the second lot only 12 years. Will check next years 100 hrly. Owner manufactured part. Cowl baffle rubber is fabric reinforced rubber. It doesn’t split like normal rubber.

McMaster or Grainger have a variety of neoprene rubber sheet. Something like 8599K35 might be the ticket.

Truck mudflaps of rubber style are also reinforced and cut size.

Thanks for the ideas... I've looked at Grainger and McMaster for rubber sheets and looks like I'll end up spending $50 for a couple pieces of rubber. Anyone else have a less expensive suggestion? I found some mud flaps at my local Farm and Fleet for $12, but they were not fabric reinforced.

Thanks,
Doug

Did you check the auto parts store for reinforced gasket material?

Just curious, my Cessna 170 B parts manual has a different illustration then shown in your attachment. My manual is dated Sept. 1, 1956 and includes parts catalog revisions through Feb. 26, 1971. The 2 parts (page 53, Fig. 28-3, part # 0442119-1) are in different locations for the early Bracket Assembly 0512125-1. One is on top of the spring pack and the second is on the bottom of the spring pack. What is the date of your parts manual?

For the later "B" model planes see page 54, Fig. 29. That illustration is totally different relative to pads and shims supporting the spring pack in the later "fish mouth" Bracket Assembly PN 0512000-75. Only one shim is shown on top of the spring pack and none on the bottom.

Hopefully this not another example of an error in the parts manual. I need to have my I.A. check out what setup is in my plane.

That's what I used 15 years ago. Still fine.

Jim,

That image is from the service kit SK70A52-4 instructions for the replacement of the tailwheel bracket with the fish mouth bracket. I have a 170A and the parts catalog for the A shows the same parts (exploded slightly different, but both pads are still below the springs).
