C-170B abrasion boots

I ordered Cessna PN 1232040-5 for the leading edge of the stabilizer. The rubber is 6” wide which means when attached it will extend 1” aft of the leading edge aluminum piece and go over the rivets. Seems like it will end up being a bit thick and lumpy bonding over this structure. Wondering if anyone has any feedback on bonding these on or does the rubber need to be trimmed narrower to bond ahead of this river line. Thanks for any advice.

S1938-3-68.00 is the superceded PN I believe which Del found worked.

Maybe someone has a photo of their installation. As far as part numbers go this is the current one that a few of us have been given. There are a couple YouTube posts on installation but not anything showing a C-170.

I have a set off of a 172xp. Thought I could simply put them on a B but the curvature of the LE compared to most Cessna straight L/E HS will make it a bit of a challenge. Likely Del knows the secret.

According to calls and emails with Textron few weeks back, 123040-5 (uniform thickness roll type boot) is the current part that can be installed in place of 0332136-4 listed in the 170B parts manual (page 27). Of note, is that in the instructions Textron supplied (AK182-217J dated 3/11/85), it specifically states that "Boots may be relieved to clear rivet heads". -this might be an option for you Olypen.

Below is a couple photos of what looks to be S1938-3-68.00 installed on a 170b. I would love to know more about installing this. This pre-formed and thickened leading edge design seems to put the rubber where it's most needed. It even looks closer in dimension to the one in the Parts Manual. There was also a good thread on this forum a while back that seemed to be inconclusive about installing this one. If anyone knows how to install this, that would be great.

Here are a couple of pics of the OEM Cessna Boots I installed a couple of years ago. I did not trim them and they extend aft of the rivet line. They look good in my opinion and have already deflected debris that would have nicked, or dented the leading edge. I used 3M 1300L adhesive on the contact surfaces of the boot, and Goodrich 74-451-11 Edge Sealing Compound on the trailing edge of the boot as a seal and transition to metal. I had my Horizontal Stab off at the time for skinning and I made a wooden cradle so the leading edge was sitting up. I do remember applying the boot from the inboard edge outward. Two people applying make it easier. Mike
