1955 170B fuel selector valve placard

Post by snellbob »

I have a late 1955 model. Can anyone post a photo of what it should look like. Mine is nearly gone.

I drew these up in Paint and printed them on clear adhesive label stock from Avery using my ink jet printer. After printing I coated them with clear spray-on acrylic, to keep the ink from rubbing off. Each quadrant is cut out and applied separately. I may have a few extras laying around if anyone is interested.

Moody Aerographics also sells them. Spruce sells them. (But their addt'l placard warning to switch tanks immediately upon reaching 5K ft does not apply to our 170s. Also note the 172 has 19.5 gals useable instead of the C170 series. Addt'l numbers are included in their sheet of placards to replace them if desired.)

This is how I refurbished our 172 trainer. A clear, round Plexiglas cover is installed on top of the placard in this pic to protect the decal.

I have a great fear about the 170B Fuel selector valve .

We had a Club Parts/ Service Co ordinator who could reel off parts number from IPC without ever looking at the manual. He was very good. What was his name?

He had a tragic event in his beloved new C195. I listened to his story of his tailwheel /fuselage bulkhead failure on a landing. He could feel the event as it happened.
Separate event was tragic. Engine kept stumbling misfiring on initial take off.

Years later At a Petit Jean fly in [ remember the Good Old Days?] I spoke to John Benham about the incident. He had followed up the accident report.

He stated that investigators found there were a number of loose screws noted in the Fuel Valve Selector.

It sent chills up my spine. Such a smart intelligent pilot.

I thought of the medical community - so much training to avoid "air embolism" events.

Thanks for everyones input for information on the 170 fuel selector valve placard. My wife created a good copy of the original in MS Word. Although not exact as original I believe it works well. The placard was printed using Avery #60501 UltraDuty GHS chemical labels. This has a slight matte finish so I used a polyurethane clear coat in order to gloss it up. The best would have been a gloss clear sheet but it seems that is hard to find for Laser printers. So basically I printed the placard onto the label sheet, gave it 2 coats of clear, let dry overnite and cut out with a fresh razor blade. Ran all metal parts thru the blast cabinet, painted, applied clearcoat and cooked in oven for 1 hour at 225 degrees. Applied placard pieces and there you have it!

Note that original piece lettering appeared to be a white ink stamp.

Furthermore, if anyone would like the MS Word file I am more than happy to send it to you. Afraid I’m not savvy enough to attach it here. Just send me a PM.
Thx

I replaced mine with this;

Billet aluminum, with CNC'd lettering etc, was a lot nicer then I expected.

I'm also using one of these. Very nice piece and worth it.

The only problem I see with that is .... the placard is improperly-worded. (The instructions to “switch” to single tank operation upon reaching 5K’ is incorrect except for certain models 172.)

Well, that is an interesting observation.

Mine did NOT have the shown instructions for the 172. And I did not notice that when I made my comment.
