1948 Landing Light Options

I am presently training in my 1948 C-170 that, at sometime, had the landing light removed. I am in need of a landing light for the night time flying requirement, the bracket for the original Grimes light is also missing. Looking for ideas and suggestions for getting a landing light installed in the airplane with my preferences as follows.

1. Nose cowling installation.

2. Original Grimes installation.

3. Leading edge installation.

In earlier days, you could install a leading edge light based on the similarity to the ones installed on the A and B models, using a 337. There is one 337 on file at the TIC170A web page in the MX section. Not sure if the average FAA inspector will sign off on those any more without a DER approval, as they have gotten very unhelpful in this regard.

bweathered, Don't know who you are. I have an original Grimes that I've had to nurse along over the years. It's pretty simple after doing it a couple times for different reasons. Dried grease was one problem. Dirty contacts another common item. I just talked to a new member recently who owns a Cessna 414 and he thinks his light is the same as mine. Maybe so ?? I like it for it's 250 watts and the nostalgia. I did put in a single 100 watt light in the leading edge just because I like to have it come on immediately with the flick of the switch instead of waiting 15 seconds to have the original motor down. Could anyone who has installed a leading edge landing light in a 1948 clarify a couple details? I'm looking at the example 337 from the library. The window assembly, light, channels, springs, and screws are clear. Would love to know if Cessna part 0523106 was used at all in this installation. That part shows up as 4-25 in the C170A and C170B parts catalog. It also shows the eight 4-26 AN366F832 nut plates mounted on the 4-25 landing light bracket assembly. This bracket assembly is mounted between the appropriate two leading edge ribs and is the aspect I would love to see any available detail on. I realize that these details are covered by the 337 statement saying work performed in accordance with Cessna Structural Manuals and AC43.13-1A... Any input much appreciated!

My '48 had a leading edge landing light installed when the wings were metallized in 1961. It looks like they used a custom bracket from somewhere called "F. Ricks" (or maybe Fricks?) in Selma, CA. I have attached a PDF with the relevant parts of the 337 in case it is useful to you.
