O-360 C1G conversion of C-170A

Postby gary w. potter » Fri Jul 06, 2018 2:50 am

We have all heard the story of the FREE puppy. There ain't no such thing!!! Well I was given a O-360 C1G from a wreck RV. Hartzell has the STCSA01111CH and I'm hoping that someone has experience with that Mod. I'm into the process for about 10K now with about 10K more to go. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I found no stc supporting the O360 C1G install on a 170. so it is up for sale for 11,000.00 with docs for field overhaul. Interested can reach me at kgpot9229@suddenlink.net or 325 695 7225

Gary, why not convert the engine to match an STC that is out there? You can convert one Lycoming model to another model with the appropriate documents to do such. Lycoming pub SSP110-1 will help start the effort but IPC for each engine will be the key to doing it correctly.

Gary,
Stoots has SA02106AK which is for "installation of Lycoming O-360 series engine and Sensenich M76EMM propeller." I wonder if that would work for your engine? Trouble is it appears you would be limited to a fixed pitch prop. It would be worth asking Hartzell and/or Stoots if you could use STC SA01111CH -- the Hartzell STC to use their prop on a O-360-C1G -- to piggyback on SA02106AK. The "C" in O-360-C1G indicates that it is setup to use conical mounts rather than the later style dynafocal mounts. The advantage to the conical mounts is you're going to lose weight while you fly. The "G" in the model number indicates that the prop governor is on the front left side -- a moot point perhaps if you have to run a fixed pitch prop. If you were to convert the engine to a compatible model like the Del-Air conversion as Jud suggests you would have to swap case halves. My suggestion is to market the engine to someone with a 8GCBC Scout as that is the aircraft that originally used this engine. Then use that money to get a Continental IO-360! :D
