installing Cessna 175 tanks in my Cessna 170b

Anyone out there every put Cessna 175 long range fuel tanks into there Cessna 170B giving you the benefit of having long range tanks? Might there be a STC available? Thanks for your help!

There isn't an STC for it but it's been done several times on a field approval.
You need the tanks and a few other parts out of the 175 wings.
You also need electric fuel gauges as the 175 didnt have sight gauges.

Matt Lawson of Lawson Aviation up in Michigan (269) 521-6214 has gotten it approved.


There IS an STC held by DelAir to extend your existing tanks. You send your tanks to him, he welds on extensions and send you back the tanks, kit and paperwork. I think that's a $5k figure but not certain.

I went another route and just got the 175 wings approved for my 170. Know anyone selling a good set of 175 wings?

David, did you look into the Flint tanks, if so what did you think?

Only what I read on the forum.
I didn't like the complexity of extra filler necks and transfer pumps.
Same for the Javelin set up. More places to fill fuel and transfer pumps.

The long range tanks simplify things.
The DelAir long range tanks keep use of your sight gauges too.

Yeah except for the price the DelAir tanks seem like the way to go. Then again, nothing is cheap in aviation.

Yeah. DelAir is pricey but it's a bubble wrapped solution with no hoops to jump thru.

If you can get the long range tanks approved, I think that's the most cost effective route.
Keep in mind, most of the long range tank swaps I've heard about have not yielded much of an increase in usable fuel capacity on the placards.
You HAVE more fuel available but the legal limits might not change much for planning. It all depends on the guy approving the 337.

DelAir gets you 52 gallons usable.

It might be a bit more expensive, but you may want to look at JPI also. We got both units in and evaluated them and the JPI was hands down much higher quality.

The simplest way is to install a set of C-175 wings on a pre-approved 337.

Here's part 1 of a four-part video series showing installation of the Del-Air long-range (+30 gallon) tank mod. I think there are two mods, the +30 "long range", which requires modification of two ribs, and a +15 gallon "extended" option, which modifies one rib.

Didn't find part IV, but the other 3 are quite interesting. Shows that there is a LOT of work to gain 15 gallons per side. It would be interesting to know what that project cost.

If anyone is interested in doing this mod PM me and I can give you a source for what is needed to do it.I salvaged the nose ribs from some 175 wings and the last time I looked the tanks and tank bay part of the wings are still in the surplus pile. I almost did the change myself but find the javeline tank setup easier to maintain and C of G management. bill.penner(at)gmail.com

Frank, then you have to modify your bladder to go 6 hours without a taking a leak.
