Re: Devil's advocate

I bought mine because it met my mission more than any other aircraft, relative to operating cost. Periodically I try to convince myself that my mission is other than what it is, but then sanity prevails. I do wish I had 200 more lbs of useful load. If only. If if if. That's the devil on my shoulder ...

Re: VG installation with STOL kit

FWIW I have VGs inhereted from the previous owner. I have a different engine with different performance than all of you but what appears to be the difference is more control authority at a high AOA, slightly lower stall speed. I can fly around using ailerons indicating 0-10 mph. Does this have any r...

Re: Crosswind gear?

Interesting. I knew about the crosswind gear available on the 195 but I would never have imagined it on the 170. Thanks!

Crosswind gear?

OK, I'm going to own up and ask about crosswind gear as I've seen oblique references to them on here. I was flipping through one of my older airframe logbooks yesterday and discovered (hadn't noticed before) a maintenance entry from when the Cleveland brakes were installed way back when on 77C (I ha...

Re: Frost Removal using a Red Dragon Preheater?

Wing and stabilizer covers. Required equipment in your neighborhood as much as mine. I once flew my 170 through FSJ on my way to Alaska in December. Learned a lot about cold weather flying on that trip 8O

Re: Franklin 165

You know I'd love to have those extra 20 phonies up front. Having said that if I had a Franklin I would love it and would defend it fiercely. Finding the parts and keeping this engine running with them would become part of the challenge of owning a 60 year old airplane. I'd think it special and jus...

Re: Franklin 165

How much do you want the extra 20 horses? That's a lot in a relatively light airplane, at an extreme savings over the 180hp and 210 hp conversions. It is what attracted me to my airplane. I have not had any problems getting parts as of yet, except that you have to live with overhauled parts instead ...

Re: Flying out west in N1715D

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, late fall is about the only time Page gets any rain to speak of, other than the occasional monsoon in August (most of which never reaches the ground <g>) My old stomping grounds. I lived in the Lake Powell area from 2000-2005 and made it my business to visit Moab seasonally...

Re: BAS inertia reel system

In any case, writing the discrepancies into the logbooks (permanent record) is not authorized by the regulation. IMO I'm not sure that an A&P or IA is going to write *anything* in the logbooks of my plane without my authorization. I can't force him to write anything against his will, and he can...

Re: BAS inertia reel system

Jim, You're right on. I would contact BAS and buy a new unit. I've just been on EBay looking for FLACK jackets and BS detectors. Maybe a new Discussion index is in order: FACT FREE ZONE moderator=Foghorn Leghorn LOL So, I'm curious. Do you think the FAA policy statement that I linked earlier does n...

Re: Larger Tires for a 170B?

We're in the process of getting approval for the 8.50x6's for our 170B and I had a question for you guys - do they use the same cleveland 6.00 wheels as the 6.00x6's I have on now? My mechanic thought the wheels for the bigger tires were, uh, wider? If that's the right term. Thanks. Did you obtain ...

Re: BAS inertia reel system

First we are talking about two separtate issues The first being installation and inspection processes. So follow along. I've been at this for 40+ years and NEVER overlooked, ignored or turned my head while an aircraft rolled out the door less than completely LEGAL and (AIRWORTHY). I would invite yo...

Re: BAS inertia reel system

I have been told by FAA FSDO types that "IF" you remove a STC'd part from one plane and install on another as long as you obtain a bill of sale from the owner specifically mentioning transfer from one "N" number - serial number to another of like vintage you don't have to go to ...
