Re: Upholstered Panel behind the cargo compartment
Either noise control or to prevent cold air in the tail from moving forward into the cabin.
I installed one in 81D to block off the tail's cold winter air - worked quite well.

It's worth noting the originals were brass or bronze (non magnetic) to avoid affecting the compass.
Any replacement parts should possess that quality.

Re: Long Pawl vs Short Pawl on ABW 3200 TW
On the steering arm types: I switched to the upturned version after about 200 hours in the 170 when I rebuilt the tailwheel. You do need new upper and lower dust caps. I made the swap that evening and was flying the next day - could not tell any difference at all. The reason I rebuilt the tailwheel ...

Re: Long Pawl vs Short Pawl on ABW 3200 TW
I haven't used both to know the difference and don't know if the stock pawl is the short or long.
If I had to guess, I'd get the short one to keep the tailwheel locked longer. But, that's a guess.

Not sure which is original but I'd call ABW and get ...

Re: R Door Lower Hinge Attaachment
I drilled the head off the screws and punched them out. You can use a magnet to fish them out. When replacing them, I took a piece of scrap aluminum and mounted two nutplates. A long set of forceps will hold it in place while you start the screw. I had the gear legs off when I did mine so it was MUC...

Re: Continental IO-360 Install
Buying the IO-360 will be the cheap part. The prop will set you back $3k used or $10 new Buying the STC will cost as much or more than the motor and it is NOT a complete kit by any stretch of the imagination. The instructions also leave much to the imagination. The exhaust is all custom fab work and...

Re: B.A.S. Inertia-Reel Shoulder Harness
I had the utility ones in 81D. (Not BAS but close enough) There is a small frustration when you reach behind to fish the shoulder straps and flip them around to have the top belt straight. Next, you need to fish your passenger's (happy wife, happy life...) Which ones did I buy to instal in 95D? The ...

It's the other way around. The folks on this site run off anyone that do anything other than keep them original.

How well does carbon fiber handle open flame? That might be the biggest issue of using it in the cabin or around the engine.

I think you guys underestimate a carbon fiber layup. You can't compare it to fiberglass.

Re: Carbon Fiber Cowl for Cessna170
Was a 100 year operational life span a design consideration when Cessna decided to use alclad aluminum? Or was it the cost effective solution of the time? Fiberglass boats from the 70's are still in service today if maintained and they are readily repairable. I'm sure the same arguments were made ov...
