Re: When do I decide to reject a TakeOff....???
I didn't recognize the F-05 type rating so I looked it up - Ford Trimotor! Hoot sounds like my kind of guy! Russ Farris

Re: Those Tough Old Continentals!
Not to resurrect a zombie thread, but I never miss an opportunity to correct George. Studebaker always designed and built their own engines, that 1951 would have had a Studebaker Champion 170 ci flathead... NOT a Continental 226, which WAS used in Kaiser/Frazer cars.

Re: When do I decide to reject a TakeOff....???
Are you guys certain you're talking about the same Gibson? FAA records show 7 Gibsons with NV addresses.... none of them rated in airliners, three of them not even pilots...they are controllers or dispatchers. Harvey was supposedly retired in Costa Rica. Yes, that is what I remember from a Wall Str...

Re: When do I decide to reject a TakeOff....???
Looks like the report of Hoot's passing was greatly exagerated - my apologies! Having spent many hours at the helm of a 727 (my favorite all-time airliner) I believe in Hoot's innocence in this matter. ALPA showed several documented 727 uncommanded slat extensions, but the NTSB discounted them. Plea...

Re: Pelton leaving Cessna
Hard to say, I think Pelton has done a great job at Cessna (and he owns a 195; how cool is that?) He survived a "60 minutes" segment several years ago that mentioned him as a "degree mill" graduate from some bogus school in South Dakota.

Re: When do I decide to reject a TakeOff....???
I happen to know some of the story on this. It was being filmed for a movie in Costa Rica (Endless Summer 2, 1994) but wasn't staged, it was a real accident. The pilot was none other than retired TWA captain Harvey "Hoot" Gibson, famous for a high-altitude upset in a 727 in 1979; they comp...

Re: Question about red-tagging props
As an FAA approved repair station, I don't believe they had a choice red-tagging your prop. If an un-airworthy item gets their attention, that's it. They could lose their repair station status if the Feds got wind of it. It has happened in the past. Russ Farris Edit - eight bolt props seem to be mor...

Re: Factory printing on plastic sub-panel
I just looked in my IPC for the 170. The embossed lower plastic panel was from S/N 26996 on. What's the S/N of the last 170 off the line? It's likely the panel change was already planned for the 170C, which was certified but never put into production. The 170C morphed into the 172. There is a '56 he...

Re: Factory printing on plastic sub-panel
George - I can't post pictures on the forum because our membership in the 170 association is in Forrest's name, but here's a link to panel shots of our '57 172 with the same as '56 170 plastic lower panel. The labels on the radio switches below the right hand com are the ones I made with a P-touch l...

Oil pressure line with air instead of oil!
A few weeks ago, I came across a thread where George mentioned an instrument shop told him the oil pressure gauge was designed to work off a column of air in the line, not oil. Which was counter to what I always thought. 27B has an engine that about 100 hours over TBO (but with six new ECI cylinders...

Factory printing on plastic sub-panel
On the 1956 170 and early 172s, the plastic sub-panel where the switches are have the black lettering embossed (sp??) into the plastic. I'm wondering exactly what process Cessna used to do this. At some point I want to freshen up the panel with vinyl paint, and I'm not that thrilled about using my P...

Re: Photo Album
Yes, the Stinson and the 170 have their good and bad points. Stinson negatives - the Franklin 150 burned 10 gallons an hour, pretty much regardless of power settings and mixture, within normal cruise parameters. Parts for it have been iffy for quite a long time. Airframe parts are plentiful used, a ...
