Here's my contribution, a study done by Boeing itself on world wide jet transport hull losses since 1959. Scroll down to page 20 for accident rates by aircraft type. Russ Farris

Re: 170 B with less than 1300 hours TTAF
I'm flying the '57 172 from Charlotte to Wilmington Friday to visit my daughter and Timmonsville, SC is right on the way. It's located at Huggins Field (58J, correct?) I really want to check this out, it seems like a very original airplane. Not as a project, obviously! Russ Farris That's the place....

Re: Cracked c145-2 case
Tom and Spduffee - check out the thread linked below. I took apart a C-145 a year ago and found the same crack in the main bearing saddle, left side of the case between #2 and #4 cylinders. Pictures in the link; do the cracks look like this? I'm just trying to determine if there is a pattern here. R...

Re: solid tail wheel
I'm curious too - why would you want a solid tail wheel? My Stinson 108 had one, it rode like it was made of stone and transmitted taxiway noise up from the rear fuselage like a megaphone. I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Russ Farris

Re: Venturi location
Both my 170 and my current '57 172 have the venturi mounted on the left side, added years after manufacture on a 337. Static port is still on the left, and both aircraft are/have been IFR certified. Both work very well. I'm not following what the issue is supposed to be.

Re: propellor color
The prop was polished aluminum, with angled red tips with Mac Cauley decals in the center of the blades. Repros of the decal are available from Moody's Aerographics or Chief Aircraft.

Re: Paint turnout
Dillon - once again great job! I refinished my 1957 172 in the original colors myself about a year ago. It's the second airplane I ever painted. I know it's weird, but your airplane is actually a 1954 model year. Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, September was when next year's new models were in...

Re: Paint turnout
That's the 1954 scheme, right? Looks just great, love that blue. Since you are going all out for originality I'm sure you won't forget the 20 inch wing numbers!

Re: Trying to narrow down odd noise at low RPM
Yep, it's the venturi, or venturis. They whistle at low RPM, but not all installations. Drove me nuts too till I firgured it out.

Re: Sky-Tec starter installed
Our 170C with a nose wheel ('57 172) came with a Skytec starter. After over 100 hours of flying with it, I'm happy. It doesn't crank the engine much faster than the Delco would, which is good. We've decided to keep it on the upcoming overhaul. But personally, I was happy with the old pull-starter on...

Re: Contenental Case paint color
Crankcase and valve covers were gray - a somewhat lighter shade than Lycoming uses. The Gold color, which every overhauler loves to do, wasn't used by Continental until the late '60s. I'm not even sure any O-300 ever came that way. There is a original paint 1966 172 sitting on the tamp here at Rock ...

Re: Time for Paint!
It's a 60 plus year old airplane. You can't go wrong with an original paint scheme. A current Cessna paint scheme on a 170 looks like a 65 year old woman trying to dress like she's 21...it's not something you want to call your own! Custom or "modern" paint jobs can be a drag if/when it com...
