Re: Mode C issue

After being notified my encoder was way off 2 weeks ago I did a little troubleshooting. I ensured the electrical connection between the transponder and encoder was properly seated and snugged up a few slightly loose static system connections. Today was clear so I did a Mode C check with New Orleans ...

Logging New Tires

Guys, when I log my new tire installation should I include the Part # and Serial # of each tire? Or just the brand name and size of the tires and tubes?
Thanks!

Congrats Jason! Have fun and fly safe.
I just bought my 170 in November and also had insurance requirements to satisfy. Even that part was fun!

Re: Time for tires

I installed a new set of Monster Retreads with Leak Guard tubes today. It was a lot of work but a good experience overall. Cleaning and inspecting everything for cracks and flaws took a bit of extra time but I'm sure everything is in order. I had one A&P and two other pilots helping me by shouti...

Thanks for the info guys. Looking forward to my first tire change this morning. You must be an airplane nut to look forward to this!

Torque Values

I'll be mounting my new tires tomorrow under supervision of a TC170A member and A&P. Can anyone tell me the torque values for the wheel bolts and brake caliper bolts? I have Cleveland wheels and Cleveland double puck brakes.
Thanks, JP White

Re: Refueling Plastic Contaimers

I bought a pair of VP Racing 5 gallon fuel jugs with 14" VP Deluxe fill hoses. I think I paid $65 for the pair delivered. Not cheap but much better quality and easier to use than the common plastic can. I recommend buying a fill hose with each can, because the hose is a bit troublesome to move ...

Re: Time for tires

Ask your mechanic to show you how to hand pack the bearings. It builds character! Yes hand packing wheel bearings is responsible for most of my character! I grew up in a shop and one of my jobs as a youngster was sitting on a stool and packing huge truck wheel bearings. I think I'll wear gloves thi...

Time for tires

After a series of touch and gos yesterday I felt the need for new tires. The local mechanic / flight school owner recommended Monster Retreads due to all my practice on hard surfaces. Another mechanic on the field ( and 170 Association member) offered to instruct me on the process at his shop Saturd...

Re: Mode C issue

Thanks George. I'll stick my head under the panel Friday to look for an obvious problem. If I get lucky I'll buy a couple lottery tickets! If not, I'll make an appointment with the avionics shop.

Mode C issue

Guys I flew through the Gulfport TRSA yesterday at 5500' but ATC said my transponder reported 1500'. I recycled the transponder with no change. This was the first time I used my transponder - just bought the airplane in November. The vacuum driven artificial horizon failed yesterday also. The transp...
