Newbie Oil Change Question

My C145 has an oil filter, so do I still have an oil screen to remove and clean? I have an experienced helper lined up for my oil change but I want to show up with everything I need - such as crush washers, if I have an oil screen to remove in addition to the filter... BTW I plan to switch to 50 Wei...

Re: High Oil Temp?

The blast tubes as mentioned have to point at the oil screen area of the accessory case at the lower arrow. If it isn't the oil temp will likely read high. Blast tube.png You have an A model. I'm finding most run cooler than B models. Curious how deep your cowl lip is between the red lines in the p...

I agree! I need a gauge that reads in degrees.

Re: High Oil Temp?

When it starts getting hot, mixture rich helps a lot. Exhaust leaks near push rod tubes can hear up your oil. Proper engine baffling installation has a major effect too. Also what is the condition of your cold air blast tubes that aim at the lower acc case? Pictures are good for us to help. Need to...

High Oil Temp?

I made a precautionary landing today due to higher than normal engine oil temp. I was on the 3rd leg of a 500 nautical mile trip home and climbing at about 80 mph to 4500' with a leaned mixture (just rich of peak). My oil temp needle normally rest atop the "L" in OIL. Today it was in the m...

Triple Tree Aerodrome

As a new pilot I have often dreamed of making the trip "home" to S.C. and fly with my best friend. Sunday he and I flew to Triple Tree Aerodrome , SC00. 7000' golf course smooth runway, lots of camping areas  for RVs, large nice bathhouses.  Staff took us on a tour.  The place is huge.  Th...

Re: Flew my first cross country today

Where did you wind up making your stops? just curious..... I stopped at KGZH Evergreen, AL and KOPN Thomaston GA. KOPN was having a benefit event giving rides and a big twin was unloading skydivers at 12000' so it was a bit busy when I landed. I was entering downwind when I hear "skydivers are...

Re: Flew my first cross country today

Jason, it was about 5 hours flying time and almost 7 hours total time with two stops. An adventure for sure.

Flew my first cross country today

Guys, I flew my 170A from Hammond, LA to Newberry, SC today. My first real cross country, a little over 500 NM. Man am I tired! Most of the trip was at 5500' so I leaned the mixture for the first time. It's was a bit spooky when the engine RPM suddenly dropped on my first attempt. I quickly develope...

Re: One Fuel Stop or Two?

Guys, Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like one fuel stop would certainly be feasible – but I have plenty of time so I will plan on two stops on the way up. Maybe one stop on the way back if the winds are favorable. Would Flight Following be an option without mode C? I’m trying to get to the avi...

Re: One Fuel Stop or Two?

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm planning on two stops. Also planning on airports with intersecting runways as Tim suggested. Looking forward to this trip - should be an adventure.

That’s great info for my upcoming cross country!
Should I expect similar numbers with my stock C-145 (with Red trim)?

One Fuel Stop or Two?

Guys, I’m planning my first real cross country from Hammond, LA (KHDC) to Newberry, SC (KEOE) and I’m debating on one fuel stop or two. My gut tells me due to my inexperience and uncertain fuel burn rate I should make two stops. (I have about 130 hours total and about 32 in my 170A). Currently I’m l...
