I agree that towing with a towbar on the main gear takes some getting used to...not as easy as a training wheel airplane...but then our birds take more attention while taxing as well. After getting used to my main gear tow bar, I'd never go back to honking on the tail unless it was an emergency. My ...

The problem was indeed the O rings at the end of the plunger. Just to be sure that there was not a problem with the check valves, I coated the old O rings with silicone grease, reinstalled the plunger and was able to draw fuel into the primer tube. The O rings had shrunk and become hardened with age...

Hey Greg, that 170 you looked at in SW MN wasn't blue over white was it? The first 170 I went to see back in 2002 was in SW MN. It was a 1953 170B that had spent time in Central America as a "fly sprayer" where the right seat faces aft and they release flys for some agricultural reason. Ha...

Well I have my crusty latching critter out of my left door :) Sure is dirty and really gummed up with whatever remains of the lube that someone put on it many years ago. Since Cessna decided not to put a window on the inside surface offering some access to this mechanism, it never got lubed. Someone...

I got my lugs and tailwheel eye bolt via the great George deal a couple of years ago. Right now I can't remember where I got them from though, but I think it was a company near Greenwood MS...that rebuilds L-19s and Stearmans. I use an old Bolens garden tractor that I got for free, rebuilt the old T...

Broken Fuel Primer

I went to pull out on the primer today for a nice shot of fuel, and found that the primer pulls out freely without taking in any fuel. Feels as if the plunger has disconnected from the handle, as there is no friction or sound as I pull out on the unit. Fortunately, pumping the trottle worked today a...

My solution is a bit more complex, but the outcome is worth the hassle. I don't like yanking on the tailwheel, nor the tail or struts....so I just designed and welded up a nice folding tow bar for the main gear. Just think of the letter "Y". The tops of the "Y" attach to the tow ...

I'll have to go out and look, but I don't think any approval paperwork came with the beacon. Mine is the smaller beacon with two rows of LEDs and is made to directly replace the Cessna flasher units on the tail, but happens to fit the hole on top of my fuselage where the other ratty strobe was locat...

I can't find specific information on original latch spring replacement, but thought this would be a good place to start. The cam in my door rotates but no longer has spring pressure...so the door will not latch. Any hints from the "been there done that" crowd before I start to figure out h...

Over $600 for a Grimes rebuild? Makes me feel better about going with the new Whelen LED beacon. I bought one at Oshkosh this year for a shade over $400. I like the old grinders, but as soon as I saw another aircraft with the LED beacon from a distance, I was sold. The LED beacons are very distictiv...

Hey guys...what's all the fuss with the CPA riggers list? The link to the list was posted on Tom Short's post on the first page of this thread

Thanks for the CPA list of riggers, Tom. Turns out one is in Manassas, VA which is within 30 minutes flying time. With the storm flip and subsequent rebuild of the outboard sections of both wings back in 1962, and years of misadjustment, my plane needs to be taken back to square one and done all ove...

Sounds like there are a few 170s out there with a heavy left wing as evindenced by the number of them that have an "illegal" aileron tab on the left side deflected in the up position. I had all I can take of my left-wing heavy 170. I flew a long IFR trip down to Florida earlier this month,...

I've been running a Concorde RG25-XC for about three years now. I got the XC to help the old Delco-Remy "beast" starter swing the prop. Now that I have a B&C starter, I don't need the extra output and would be better off with the standard RG25. With the XC, I have indeed experienced pr...

Thanks for the info fellas :) I'll probably just fly another 15 hours to oil change and then do the work. I don't think the gen oil seal is known for catastrophic failure. I guess I'll call Niagra Air Parts...or the place down in KY that did the generator overhaul for the seals. Will be interesting ...
