Re: Elevator Balance
I recently checked my rudder balance. It is seriously underbalanced at 42.5 in-lbs. To get it in within limits I would need to add 1.6 lbs. at 9.5"! The previous owner was a used car dealer who must have got a bulk discount on Bondo. There are two 6"X6" doublers just under the nav li...

Re: '48 C170 Fuel Pump
Not sure where those old records were located or what the retention time was. No computers but they did manage registration from a national office so the FAA registration branch might be a good place to start. I know all 337s are filed there now. If those records are public, FOIA is the way to reque...

Re: '48 C170 Fuel Pump
At the start of this thread in 2014, the OP stated he received a field approval from Seattle FSDO to remove the fuel pump presumably based upon the approved fuel line configuration in later A and B models. Interestingly, he then reported some difficulties routing these lines on his earlier model air...

Re: Online Refresher Course
Very sad news about the loss of Richard McSpadden and Russ Francis yesterday. Richard was a passionate aviation safety advocate who spread good advice and was always nonjudgmental in his analysis of accidents. Only last week, he put out a video on the Reno tragedy with advice to GA pilots on collisi...

Re: AD2023-17-04
I guess we were typing at the same time:) It is ultimately the owner's/operator's responsibility for AD compliance. I can't think why he couldn't make an entry stating that. Correct me if I'm not thinking clearly. You are thinking clearly in that it is the owner/operator responsibility for complian...

Re: Question for the Mechanics
https://www.csobeech.com/files/TCM-SB03-3.pdf Would most agree that this is reliable guidance for assessing and maintaining Continental Cylinders? Given the potential of low compression results during annual inspections, I would think this Service Bulletin would be of interest to owners as well as m...

Re: Question for the Mechanics
Is there a written procedure for everything a mechanic does. In theory the FAA correct answer would be yes. But in the real world I'm not so sure we make theory 100 percent reality. Yes, there are a lot of documented procedures from all sorts of sources. So many in fact that a mechanic could be fol...

Re: Question for the Mechanics
For consideration (Its been alluded to but not specifically): The procedure of flushing cylinders promoted by Savvy Aviation is aircraft maintenance and subject to Part 43. 43.13 Performance Rules, prescribes that methods, techniques, and practices must conform to standards set forth by manufacturer...

Re: Pre-Buy in Oregon, Cessna 170A
I’m kind of surprised nobody has responded to your request for suggestions, so I’ll take a crack at it while also telling you there are others here more qualified. The consensus on this forum is that a pre buy inspection is best accomplished by performing a thorough annual. This is because an annual...

Re: According to some “Taildraggers Suck”.
I don’t agree. I believe they make us better pilots. https://www.flyingmag.com/technique-proficiency-taking-wing-taildraggers-suck/ I don’t think an airplane makes us a better pilot. We make ourselves better pilots by practice and effort, no matter what aircraft we fly. I agree with George that tai...

Shortage of Aviation Mechanics
A comment by the original poster on the Cessna 170A flap question made me think about a problem I am hearing more about. Are we losing A&P mechanics faster than we can replace them? Are enough new personnel coming along? What does this mean for GA? The IA I work with at a small airport in N Cali...

Re: Field Approval, Flap Stiffeners for the 170A
Thank you for your insight. I am dealing with cracks that have circumnavigated around the rivets on the inboard hinges of both flaps. So, I am working on getting my metal prepped for repaint next year. The shop can repair the dents but reskinning controls is bit out of their wheel house. I am still...

Re: Field Approval, Flap Stiffeners for the 170A
The McFarlane flap stiffeners are for Cessnas equipped with slotted (semi Fowler) flaps. These are a different design from the hinged flaps on the 170A. Would they fit? If so, I would think an IA could advise if they could be field approved. It’s a secondary flight control so I doubt it qualifies fo...

Re: Dynamic Prop Balancing
I used to own a 1950 170A with O300 and standard McCauley propeller. History on the propeller from previous owners was not informative. My original experience flying this airplane was consistently smooth operation (approximately 150 hours since buying it). Then, an oil pressure problem came up. This...

Re: Tire STC?
I purchased a set of 26” tires from a friend that I would like to put on my 170A. Is an STC required? If so, where can I find this? I’ve done a search on here, but no joy. An STC or some airworthiness approval would be required for 26” tires to be installed on a Cessna 170. You should get advice/he...
