Oh crap. You are opening up a can of worms with that question!!! One of those Ford vs. Chevy things. I also have a Champ and love it but I would like to have a Cub. The Cub needs to be soloed from the rear and has a narrow cockpit. The Champ was pretty much designed to address all the so called shor...

iowa, Who is your brother? I grew up in Underwood and have a lot of family in Fergus Falls. Have a brother and my mother still live there. By the way, a buddy of mine from Bemidji, MN wrote an told me it was -37 with a windchill of -58. I think this was on Saturday. I am building a house south of th...

The way the guys have suggested checking your oil temp gauge is good. I had a mechanic doing the annual on my plane and he told me I needed a new gauge as it wasn't working. After spending a couple hundred dollars on a new gauge and putting it in it read the same as the old gauge. One of the old sty...

Not sure why you say "unfortunately" about your 172. 172's are great planes...mine is my go to plane most of the time. I have a 1960 model that I have had for almost 20 years. I keep thinking of selling it but soon realize I would never be able to replace it for what I can sell it for. The...

Jon, I have noticed the same thing as far as being on the same sites. I'm a little bored over here in Hawaii til spring so I end up surfing the net quite a bit. Flat Country Pilot, Not sure a map would do much good since there are many lake with the same name. It would be better to post the general ...

iowa, I'm not Jon but I know where Elbow Lake is. I have never flown in there but grew up on a dairy farm near Underwood which is 10 miles east of Fergus Falls. My mother and a brother still live in the area so I am there often when I am home in the summers. I fly int Fergus quite a bit. My Cessna i...

Miles, You are right. They usually have at least one "out in the country" article. I was just hoping they would incorporate more back country stuff. I guess we "country boys" aren't their biggest readers so they have to try and satisfy the people that subscribe. It is a beautiful...

BL,

Another mag for the cavier crowd.

I think I read that they were going to try to incorporate some stuff like the old Northern Pilot but I haven't seen much that holds my interest.

Russ, I agree with nearly everything you have said. I rarely read much in AOPA anymore as they seem to be going the route of Flying. I am also a homebuilder so I belong to EAA also but it seems like most of the stuff in their mag is also going towards the quarter-half million dollar "Fast Glass...

N171Q, That is exactly what several people have told me about the swept tail conversion also. Less rudder authority. Not sure who I had talked to years ago about the conversion on mine but I do rememmber them telling me to not waste my time on the conversion if the plane is the swept tail (1960 and ...

53B, Got anymore left you want to donate to a wothy cause? LOL
I have a 60 model 172 I would love to convert but from what I have read the early straight tail is a much better conversion.

Check Harbor Freight tools and Northern tools. I think both of these places sell the fogging wands. I did my 172 a couple of years ago and it is pretty easy...just takes time disassembling everything. I used Corrosion X and like the others say...it seeped out for a LONG time.

iowa, I agree with jrenwick. If you can afford it...buy it already flying. I bought my 172 needing "a little" work. You end up working on it constantly and hardly ever flying it. I have had a few guys look at mine because it is for sale and their response is, " I found one cheaper tha...
