Re: Proper shortfield-softfield technique
Understand the difference between AoA and airspeed. Know your plane. Practice your plane. If you've got one place you operate into/out-of that's challenging, don't assume what works there is best for all situations. Every takeoff is unique. Every landing is unique. Yes, you can standardize a lot of ...

Re: O-300 with higher compression pistons
This is not intended to be "argumentive" at all...., only a contribution to the statement... The O300/C145 engines only develop 145 horsepower when they are turning 2700 RPM. Therefore, a claim that some modification increases output some/certain "percent" is a dubious claim if ...

Re: ADS-B
I use one of these: https://www.openflightsolutions.com/ with an 8" Samsung tablet mounted with a RAM mount in an empty instrument hole. I have the basic version right now, but planning on adding their AHARS upgrade when I run it in my Midget Mustang as it'll be primary (currently re-doing the ...

Re: O-300 with higher compression pistons
From my research, the C85 pistons generally won't "bolt in" and require the tops to be chamfered slightly. The aftermarket pistons are lighter, balanced better, and work well with many, many flying in the EXP/HB arena. As mentioned, there is no STC to put these on our planes...but the EXP/...

Re: tailwheel main spring replacement
I've seen no evidence mine has ever been changed either, so it's high on my "to do" list. What's the best place to source these main spring leaves?

I know the farmers would be happy to have an extra hour of sunlight every day to grow the crops! 8O  The farmers I know don't give a hoot what the hands on the clock say - they get up before the sun and work until either the sun goes down or the work is done... Honestly, DST is like cutting of...

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??
My unit, a 406 does not have an GPS input but I'm under the impression by its signal, the search would be pinpointed down to several football fields whereas a GPS signal would be down to under a decent 3 point conversion. I would have gone to a GPS unit but unfortunately in Canada they added a regu...

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??
Many things the FAA does don't make sense. And many things they do, they do and hide behind "safety" - be it our safety, or those folks on the ground, but more often, paying passengers on part 121 airlines...which tends to trickle down to us in GA. The old saw about, "if it saves just...

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??
Here's how I see the FAA decision: In order to participate in SARSAT/COSPAS, you have to have 406 ELTs since 2009 or so. (In truth, they extended 121.5 & 243.0 for a short period, but I do believe they're no longer monitored by SARSAT/COSPAS at all.) Clearly, the FAA is the "enforcement arm...
