Re: finally joined the stuck valve club

Close to 1,000 hours in O-300 airplanes, with Continental, Superior and ECI cylinders and I haven't had a stuck valve...yet. I lean when I can and use autofuel with some avgas thrown in on cross-countries. The current airplane has ECIs, and I really like them. Russ Farris

Re: 55 Years Ago - 172 and 182 Take Flight

The owner of the very first production 172 e-mailed me - his airplane does not have the 170 landing gear box. Of course, that doesn't mean some 170 fuselages didn't find their way into production...there are some oddball S/Ns there, according to him.

Re: 55 Years Ago - 172 and 182 Take Flight

Home now,and checked my voluminous 1950s period Cessna material. The 172, as ordered without any options, had no right hand side controls or rudder pedals. The right door window didn't open. Just like the 170. The interiors and instrument panels of both airplanes were the same, in the interest of pr...

Re: N2935D Makeover Debut

Thanks for the heads up John, now I need to check the 172 and make sure those are installed.

Rusty, that gauge marked "vacuum" has to be manifold pressure, correct? I don't see a venturi on your airplane.

Re: N2935D Makeover Debut

Very nice! What were the original colors when new? I like the gray case with black cylinders and valve covers. That's what you see - the original colors. The Continental Gold didn't appear until the 1960s. That's the 170 of my dreams, right there...It would look great in my hangarwith my turquoise ...

Re: 55 Years Ago - 172 and 182 Take Flight

George: I'm on a trip right now so I can't check my 1956 172 brochure, but the opening right window and right side controls were also extra cost options on the 172 if memory serves. I even have the original production order on the '57 and I seem to remember right side controls on the list. It doesn'...

Re: 55 Years Ago - 172 and 182 Take Flight

It's interesting to compare the general aviation world of 1955 to today, and the way our perception of these wonderful airplanes have evolved. When the prototype 170C became the basis for the 172 in an effort to gain back some market share from Piper's popular Tri-Pacer, there was still resistance f...

Re: Oil Consumption

Channel-chromed cylinders do have higher oil consumption than steel. When I had channel-chromed on my 170B, oil consumption was exactly in the range you experience, with no other indications like fouled plugs, ect. of a problem.

Re: Water in my instruments

I just bought the sump and some fittings and will give it a try. @Russ, you would see this much water in a gauge before the sump? Thanks again. No, the worst I ever had was heavy condensation on the airspeed glass. My main problem was inaccurate airspeed and altimeter readings. It's hard to believe...

Re: Water in my instruments

I had the same problem with my '52 170B. I installed the plastic sump bottle from Cessna (it was cheap, but that was 9 years ago). Never had the issue again.

170 sighting in "Tarantula" movie

The 170 used in the 1954 sci-fi classic "Them!" (a very good film) is well-known to most 170 buffs. So tonight I watched "Tarantula", from 1955. Not nearly as good as "Them", but John Agar plays a Arizona doctor with a 170; great shot of a bouncy landing in the beginnin...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

What was originally installed was nothing. Nav lights, with an optional flasher was it. Red rotating beacons for light aircraft became available in the late 1950s, and strobe lights didn't make their appearance until the late '60s.
