Re: '98C's Road to Recovery
(There is no such thing as "lost logbooks". There are only "deliberately re-located" or destroyed. But the valuable information within those records may be lost-to-recovery, and that is a very real destruction of truthfulness. No matter the story, ...There is only one reason tha...

Re: '98C's Road to Recovery
George, With all due respect, it appears that you imply only one reason that logs/records disappear. I know of a few, very few, who lost logs that would pay dearly to have them back. But you are absolutely correct that there is a difference in a log entry and a permanent record. Routine maintenance,...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Well.......there is obviously some manufacturing tolerances in there. I've had 5 Cessna 170's and one L19 (305A) in the hangar recently; all at the same time. The most thin spring I've measured is .312 (5/16"). The thickest spring I've measured is .335", on the L19 and 4 of 5 170's. So, ro...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Not to add fuel to the fire but looking at the pictures of the L19 with AN bolt and the 170 with eye bolt, the eye bolt is installed wrong. The tie down ring should be down (under the leaf) with the nut on top of Scott 3200. I realize we typically go down and back with bolts on airplanes but both t...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Josh, It's getting late, so I'll only address the idea that the slightly thicker main spring could impart additional stress to the airframe. First, the airframes are identical in the area of attachment; the 170 and the L19 (305A) are identical from FS 158 aft. Second, the most common type damage obs...

A saint I am not. I don't claim I'm right. I admit when I'm wrong. In fact I've learned a hell of a lot more being wrong than I have when I've been right.Aryana wrote:Wow Del, you have the patience of a saint.

Re: Horton STOL performance
What's your basis of approval for those strut fairings on your 170? I'm curious if there is an STC for those or if you had to get a 337 field approval as they are not original to the aircraft. We need a popcorn eating emoji added to the forum. popcrn.gif Subscribed... I'm not a popcorn eater,...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
I tried to get a 6th picture in that last post. Here it is, just to show those who might not be aware the L19 and 170 are not cousins, they're twin brothers with regard to aft fuselage and empennage structure.

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
I've done all this before, but didn't take notes. To satisfy my curiosity, this morning I measured the weight on the tail wheels and compared the symmetry of both planes. The 170B tail wheel had 145 lbs on it Weight on tailwheel 170B.JPG The L19 tail wheel had 152 lbs on it Weight on tailwheel L19.J...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Joshua, Paragraph (f) was highlighted to show that landing gear is one of many groups of item that DO NOT fit in with your previous suggestion that "ANY" alteration is major. If that were true, then why give examples of specific alterations to be considered major? Why not simply say "...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Bottom line is this, the subject 'alteration' of this thread is up for the installing mechanics judgement. It is an important judgement. If a mechanic is genuinely interested in NOT bankrupting the industry that he wants to specialize in, he will read the regulations as they are meant to be read. Be...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Del, thanks for the links both good reads. As stated the real problem as stated in the article is at the regional level where interpretations vary wildly. My local FSDO thinks that installing any avionics is a major alteration. I still haven't figured out how they came up with this after reading th...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Okay, I'll jump-start this by adding a bit more. Among other references on the forum to this installation, I've seen Bruce & George debating the reasoning & results of using this spring, and I've seen the modification referred to as a minor alteration. However, this is definitely not a mino...
