Re: UPS Pilots Sue the FAA

As a former freight dog who has spent many an hour strapped to a DC-8 somewhere over the Pacific, I'm appalled at the double standard here, purely because of economics. It's the same mindset the FAA had when they exempted the cargo airlines from the TCAS requirement for several years. So much for th...

Re: Photo Album

Yes, I used a Brothers P-touch. Got it at Office Depot for around 30-35 bucks. Sure beats those old ugly Dynomaker strip plastic labels from the '60s!

Re: Photo Album

Thanks George - that's Palomino Cream according to the 1957 172 brochure, and the only year they used that color. This was a great project, since it was an unrestored original Forrest and I got last year so the colors and scheme were easy to recreate (they were still on the airplane!) The N numbers ...

I've got an original in good shape with the decal in my hangar - I 'll check in a day or so and let you know what it says.

Later pressure cowl on 1952 B models

Just curious - I've seen a number of 1952 B models with the 1953-56 pressure cowl. Does this change require only a logbook entry or do you have to go through a 337? I didn't see it on the TCDS. Russ Farris

Re: Stall warning failure

Thanks Bruce. Yes, the little fingers on the horn are starting to break so I think I will try a few of George's suggestions. The ID of the housing is too small for the Lionel horn. I did find an interesting horn that also includes a USB port for downloading a sound file that plays when triggered. S...

Re: "cessna 170" pen-striping technique

If you can provide a good, clear picture of the cursive "Cessna One Seventy" logo with dimensions, Callie Graphics can provide you with an excellent Mylar reproduction. She did the "Cessna 172" on the doors and the Cessna Bird logo on the fuselage of my 172 with outstanding resul...

Re: Original Interior cloth

These guys have thousands of yards of original auto interior fabrics, going back to the early 1950s. I sent them samples from the back side of the rear armrests and they matched it - 1954 Buick! (this for my 1957 172). Give them a try. Russ Farris

Re: 0-300D STC, IN OCT FLY PAPER

And since the 145 hp for an O-300 is at 2,700 RPM, any mod that increases the power output would exceed the 2,700 RPM redline since it is a fixed-pitch prop. If it was legal to hop it up, you would have to increase the prop pitch to stay in limits.

Re: Venturies

I know the factory location from Cessna was on the right side. But my 170 and 172 have them on the left, which works fine. You might have a plumbing issue; George will be here any minute now with an insight :D

Re: Always carry a spare if you have one

My Stinson 108 still had the original solid rubber tire the Scott tailwheel originaly came with back in 1946. On pavement it was the loudest, most bone-rattling ride you could imagine. That 45 year old rubber was hard as a rock!

Keith of course is totally correct in his description above.

It goes to show you just because someone is an old pilot, it doesn't necessarily mean he knows what the hell he is talking about!

Re: Paint shop destroyed my stall warning switch

As someone who has involved with painting airplanes off and on since the 1970s, I'm appalled - a belt sander? A shocking display of ignorance. Please go over your airplane with a critical eye and check for damage. I can't say for certain it was a belt sander, it could have been a some kind fo disc ...

As someone who has involved with painting airplanes off and on since the 1970s, I'm appalled - a belt sander? A shocking display of ignorance. Please go over your airplane with a critical eye and check for damage. This type of thing is due to painters coming from the automotive world. Back in the 90...

Re: Radio Issues

I recently replaced both com antennas on the 170s successor (1957 172  ) because of weakness both recieving and transmitting. The number two improved only a little; the old antenna was a pre-Cessna ARC from the late '50s or early '60s. The number one had a much newer fiberglass type. Replacing ...
