Re: Carbon Fiber Cowl for Cessna170
I just spoke to someone today that says there is a guy who installed an TCM IO-360 in his 170B. He lives in California and works for Skunkworks. Story goes he is actively and very close to getting an STC for this discussion of a cowl. I have never heard of the guy before so I cannot verify this yet....

Re: ForeFlight Scout
need to look it up but portable I do not believe meets the requirements. You must have a system installed and tested to meet the requirements. I am being told by Garmin that they must have a factory authorized installer to install their products for warranty. I am not an authorized installer either. D

Back window of your truck :D The guy who makes these suggested that I mention that these are cut from white vinyl graphic material that is suitable for outdoor use. They will last for 5+ years on a car window. Inside, they will last forever. http://www.aircraftstickers.com/apply.htm Follow up: I de...

Re: Newbie W&B questions
Most mechanics make the mistake of weighing the aircraft with oil. Oil is to be drained when weighing then re-added according to the loading chart. It is so small most guys miss it!

Re: Glide Ratio
As an active glider pilot as well as 170B operator. I will say I have tested the 170B. I can confirm 67mph but it is infact 7:1 clean. If the prop is stopped it drops to 5:1 FYI. I teach cardinal speeds so 70 mph is what I teach. It is still 7:1. That is also only in the clean configuration with the...

Re: Axle replacement thoughts
How does one identify the hollow aluminum axles vs the solid? Do you visually see a "hollow"? Are there visible part numbers stamped? log book entry barely mentions install of Cleveland kit swapping orig Goodyear cross wind , no mention of axles. If you have wheel pants, you need to remov...

Middle is early 182 hinge
Bottom is early 172 hinge
Important thing is getting the correct hinges. All the hinges will work but only the narrow ones will clear the rear seat when installed. The one pictured on the bottom.

Re: Change in performance with different wing tips
Wing Tip technology still being patented in 2014 + Original patents same subject 1897. Hornier papers dated 1950's Winglet and Wingfence popular references. Benefits to single engine aircraft limited claims, slow speed control ability, landing. Take offs. Major benefit apparently in large aircraft ...

Re: Change in performance with different wing tips
Wing Tip performance can only be measured in the low speed regime. It is negligible in cruise settings. It will assist in lift from spilling off the wing in high angles of attack and slower speeds. It will increase aileron authority to a slower speed.

Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
The gear will move aft through use not forward. ... If the gear moves due to difficult landings like heavy crosswind landings and braking, the gear will eventually move aft. ... I have thought the same thing so I was surprised to see wear marks at the forward end of my outboard landing gear extrusi...

Thanks,I am sorry. you are correct and I mis-typed. Yes it will raise affected side. As I said I am not using any shims at the fuselage/gear attach point with the 180 gear. Thanks to all ready to correct.

Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
Doug, just to build our database. I mentioned about .025 at each end of the leg when in the extrusion. What was yours? Any idea what the change in toe in is, between all the way forward and all the way aft? I placed mine in the middle, I wanted some room between the steel and aluminium. Hi Jim. The...
